Ryan Matterson is set to see out the remainder of his contract with the Parramatta Eels after a move to a rival NRL club reportedly fell through.
The 31-year-old, a former NSW Blues representative, struggled to find his footing under coach Jason Ryles and spent much of 2025 playing in the NSW Cup with his role at Parramatta unlikely to change next season.
Matterson was granted a release earlier this year to join Warrington Wolves in the Super League, but an ill-fated stint under coach Sam Burgess saw Warrington win just one in eight appearances.
Deciding to return to the NRL in September, Matterson was shopped around to rival clubs and reportedly caught the eye of the Gold Coast Titans, who are seemingly interested in adding experience to their forward pack.
However, a potential move to the Titans fell through according to the Courier Mail, with reports citing salary cap constraints as the reason the club could not accommodate his $700,000 salary.

As a result, Matterson will remain at Parramatta for the 2026 season, aiming to regain form and consistency in the NRL, though there is a chance another club could come knocking before the season is underway.

Despite recent setbacks, the former premiership winner brings experience and leadership and could play a key role in the right environment, with his ability to cover multiple positions a potential drawcard for contenders — if his price is right.
The biggest obstacle to Matterson securing a transfer elsewhere in the NRL will be his salary, with the Eels so far yet to agree to pay a significant enough portion to attract another club’s interest.
Should the Eels’ stance change, they could still save a portion of his salary next season while allowing Matterson to find a home elsewhere in the final year of his contract.
For Matterson, a fresh start may have to wait, with his focus now on finishing his contract strongly and proving he still has plenty to offer at first-grade level.
