Robert Toia had an incredible meteoric rise in 2025, capping off his first season of NRL with selection into the Queensland State of Origin team as a rookie.

Few debutants have accomplished such a fast rise to representative football, and it has seen the boom centre become hot property with only a season remaining on his current Roosters contract.

Reports today have confirmed Toia has made a call on where his future lies, with the Sydney Roosters locking in one of their brightest young stars according to the Daily Telegraph.

Already signed through the 2026 season, the 21-year-old centre has been rewarded with a two-year extension following a breakout rookie season that saw him score seven tries in 22 NRL games.

Reports suggest Toia has signed a $2 million contract, a just reward for his incredible form last season and an extension that will keep him at the Roosters until at least the end of 2029.

Toia’s rise is even more remarkable considering he has had to make returns from multiple serious injuries to earn his way into the NRL side, including an incredible return from back-to-back ACL injuries that once threatened to derail his career before it began.

The Dally M Rookie of the Year admitted he had doubts about his future in the game but said his passion for rugby league never faded.

“I had some doubts about whether I could play at a high level but never did I think about giving it away to be honest,” Toia said. “The love of the game kept me in league.”

“When I was 15, before I signed my first Roosters contract, the Reds were keen, but my heart was always with rugby league,” Toia added.

The Roosters acted swiftly to upgrade and extend Toia’s deal amid growing interest from rival clubs, with the move effectively ending any chance of a poaching bid from incoming expansion sides the Perth Bears and Papua New Guinea Chiefs.

It’s another strong retention play from the Tricolours as they continue to build a long-term core, with Toia now set to reunite with former Queensland Origin captain Daly Cherry-Evans, who recently joined the Roosters on a two-year deal from Manly.

Toia’s new deal cements his place as a key piece of the Roosters’ future, and after overcoming serious setbacks early in his career, he now looms as a cornerstone of their premiership push for years to come.
