Back in July the New Zealand Warriors raised a few eyebrows with news of a unique partnership with the City of Logan in south-east Queensland—smack bang in one of the Brisbane Broncos’ feeder club heartlands, Souths Logan.

Four months on, the Wahs have taken the next step with the launch of the ‘Warriors Inspire Logan’ program.

In a major show of intent, the Warriors will also host a talent combine at Logan Metro Sports Complex—one of Souths Logan’s home grounds in Q Cup—on December 6 for U16 boys and girls players interested in joining the Warriors’ Logan Academy.

Announcing the news, New Zealand Warriors CEO Cameron George confirmed the appointment of ex-Warriors NRLW and Australian Jillaroos coach Brad Donald as football manager heading up the program, with former Eels and Warriors forward Mark Tookey also joining as community manager.

“We see the ‘Warriors Inspire Logan’ program providing a real breakthrough for rugby league in the area,” George said.

“Our elite academy for boys and girls in Logan will provide a direct pathway to the New Zealand Warriors’ NRL and NRLW teams.

“We have a network of academies throughout New Zealand doing a terrific job and see a real opportunity with this partnership to connect with New Zealanders in Australia.”

City of Logan mayor Jon Raven was equally as enthusiastic about the new partnership.

“Our love for league runs deep in Logan, but it’s not every day our youth get opportunities like this one,” he said.

“Our city has a proud history of producing sporting superstars. We’re ready to find the next one.”

It is understood further opportunities will be announced in due course for other age groups.

The Souths Logan Magpies are a feeder club for the Brisbane Broncos with the two organisations having a three-year partnership agreement from 2024-2026.
