Phil Gould set to commentate Grand Final just days after heart surgery image

Veteran rugby league commentator and Canterbury Bulldogs general manager of football Phil Gould is set to join Nine’s Grand Final commentary team this Sunday – just 72 hours after undergoing surgery for a heart condition, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The 67-year-old returned home on Friday following a four-day hospital stay, having admitted himself earlier in the week for tests prompted by what were described as "significant health concerns".

Reports suggest Gould first felt unwell days before being admitted to hospital, including while paying his respects at the funeral of close friend and player agent Wayne Beavies last Wednesday.

It was the concern of his colleagues and friends that reportedly prompted him to seek medical attention, ultimately leading to his hospitalisation for heart-related issues linked to a heart attack.

Gould has shown remarkable resilience following his recent health scare.

The Daily Telegraph reports that on Friday morning he spoke with Nine’s Head of Strategy, Simon Fordham, confirming he will join the broadcast team at Accor Stadium for Grand Final day coverage.

On Thursday, the veteran commentator took to social media to update fans on his health journey, sharing the news with his signature humor.

“Thank you to all the very kind wellwishers. Greatly appreciated,’’ Gould wrote on X.

“Everything is OK.

“My regular blood tests this week showed up something else that needed investigation.

“Basically, I came in to change the tyres, and they found a problem with the engine.

“Go figure.

“I’m lucky they found it early.

“The Doctors and Hospital staff have been simply amazing, but hopefully I’m going home soon.

“Looking forward to Grand Final Day.

“Best wishes to all.

“Thanks again.”
