Nelson Asofa-Solomona is set to make his first appearance since leaving Melbourne Storm as part of a hugely experienced New Zealand side for the opening round of the 2025 Pacific Championships.
The Kiwis kick off their campaign against Toa Samoa at Go Media Stadium in Auckland on Sunday, with Asofa-Solomona expected to add muscle and leadership in the forward pack.
The 16-Test veteran joins captain James Fisher-Harris and seasoned halfback Kieran Foran, who is returning to international action for the first time since the 2023 Pacific Championships final. Also included are Joseph Tapine, Erin Clark, Phoenix Crossland, and Naufahu Whyte, ensuring continuity from the squad that defeated Papua New Guinea in last year’s promotion-relegation clash. Broncos youngster Xavier Willison has been named 18th man as he chases his Test debut.

Kiwi pack boosted by experience
Asofa-Solomona’s inclusion follows his surprise exit from Melbourne Storm, a move that shocked many fans. Despite the change, the 28-year-old remains a cornerstone for New Zealand, bringing immense size and power to complement Tapine’s leadership and Foran’s tactical nous.
“Nelson adds real strength to our forward rotation, and his experience will be vital against a powerful Samoan pack,” coach Ricky Henry said ahead of the match.
Toa Samoa will counter with an imposing lineup of their own, led by Jarome Luai and Junior Paulo, alongside Payne Haas, Brian To’o, and young gun Blaize Talagi. With several international newcomers listed among the reserves, both sides are set for a thrilling contest as the Pacific Championships get underway.
The Kiwis’ clash with Samoa at 4:05 pm AEDT marks a high-profile start to the tournament.
