He’s won NRL and Super League premierships, a State of Origin series and even oversaw New Zealand’s 30-0 thrashing of Australia in the Pacific Championships back in 2023.

Now there are reports current Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire could be in line to sensationally take the reins of England ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Maguire has been linked with the England job should incumbent coach Shaun Wane be relieved of his duties following the 3-0 Ashes series whitewash.

Fans at Headingley made it clear that’s exactly what they expect following England’s 30-8 defeat to the Kangaroos in Leeds on Saturday, chanting ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ with full voice.

Despite the crowd’s reaction and growing pressure from within many quarters of the English game, Wane was defiant as ever post-match when asked if he was the right man to take England into next year’s World Cup.

“I don’t believe, I know I am—the only people I want (to back me) are the players and staff, and I know I have that,” he declared.

But should Wane indeed be replaced in the coming weeks, the RFL could do far worse than the current Brisbane Broncos boss who has built a reputation not just for winning, but winning quickly.

Maguire knows the England game extremely well, having coached Wigan to the Super League title back in 2010.

The 51-year-old will guide Brisbane into the World Club Challenge against Hull KR in northern England next February and, coincidently, is currently in the UK on a 12-day ‘study trip’ with Broncos football manager Troy Thompson.

Could it be the moons are aligning?
