The Perth Bears have continued to build momentum ahead of their NRL entry, securing their seventh signing for the 2027 season with outside back Sean Russell confirming his long-term commitment to the expansion club.
Russell becomes the latest addition to Mal Meninga’s growing roster, joining Harry Newman, Toby Sexton, Liam Henry, Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui, Luke Smith and Emarly Bitungane as part of the Bears’ first wave of recruitment.
The 22-year-old shapes as a likely walk-up starter for Perth when they enter the competition, offering versatility across the wing, centre and fullback positions.
Russell has signed a four-year deal that will see him at the Bears from 2027 through to the end of the 2030 season, providing stability and experience to the club’s inaugural backline.

Bears coach Mal Meninga described the signing as another significant milestone as the club continues to assemble its foundation squad.
“It’s another fantastic day for the Perth Bears with Sean committing to our club on a long-term deal,” Meninga said in a club statement.
“Sean is an outstanding talent who possesses the characteristics I am looking for as we continue to build our inaugural roster, he is a proven try-scorer and a fantastic defender, and I have no doubt he will be a very important piece in our roster for many years to come” Meninga added.

Russell debuted for the Parramatta Eels in 2021 and has since made 61 NRL appearances, scoring 24 tries and establishing himself as a reliable outside back at first-grade level.
He has also served as a back-up goal-kicking option and earned representative honours, playing for the Prime Minister’s XIII in 2024.
Russell said the opportunity to be part of the Bears’ inaugural journey was one he could not pass up.
“There’s already a lot of excitement and anticipation about the Bears entering the NRL, and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of it,” Russell said.
“My focus right now remains on the Eels and giving all that I have for 2026, as they have supported me throughout my career and I am forever grateful.” Russell added.
Russell’s signing is expected to be followed by further announcements, with the Bears reportedly closing in on additional targets as they accelerate recruitment ahead of their 2027 debut.
