After months of speculation and criticism, England Rugby League head coach Shaun Wane has ‘stepped aside’ with immediate effect.
The move comes after Wane’s side was whitewashed three-nil at home by Kevin Walters’ Kangaroos last October and November, and less than a year out from the 2026 World Cup to be held in Australia and PNG.
A statement from the RFL confirmed Wane’s departure.
“Wane, who has led England since February 2020, has taken time to reflect on the programme and believes the timing is right for new leadership to guide the team into the next phase, including the upcoming World Cup,” it read.

For his part, 61-year-old Wane was gracious about his time in charge, despite the sour ending at the hands of Australia in the Ashes Series.
“The privilege of leading my country in a World Cup, an Ashes Series on home soil and securing victories over Tonga and Samoa will live long in the memory,” he said.
“I’m incredibly grateful to all the players, coaches and staff I’ve worked alongside during that time…I wish everyone involved with England Rugby League the best going forward and for the World Cup later this year."
Wayne was England coach for six years, recording 14 wins from 19 matches and leading his side to the semi finals of the 2022 World Cup.
Could an NRL coach replace Shaun Wane?
Wane’s replacement is yet to be announced by the RFL, but is expected to appointed on a part-time basis—a decision that could pave the way for a current Super League or even NRL coach to fill the England role at the 2026 World Cup.
Hull KR boss Willie Peters is already being touted in the UK as the early favourite.
Should Peters be appointed, it would be the second time an Australian has lead the England side.
Wayne Bennett coached England from 2016 to 2018, taking the side to the final of the 2017 World Cup.
