New Zealand Warriors halfback Luke Metcalf has been in hot demand after leading the Dally M voting in a breakout 2025 campaign before his season was cruelly cut short by injury.

The halfback has now made a call on his future, with the Warriors announcing this afternoon that Metcalf has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2028 NRL season.

“I’m really happy to get it sorted and get it done. So stoked I can now look to the future and the next few years,” Metcalf said in his Warriors statement. “We’ve got a really good team here and I think we can do something special. I can’t wait to get back and start playing.”

Metcalf said the dream of helping the Warriors win their first premiership was central to his decision to stay.

“There’s that lingering thing of trying to win the Warriors their first comp. That’s what keeps me up at night and keeps me motivated. You want to go down in history as one of the greatest teams and greatest players to play the game. For me there was one way to do that, and that was by winning a comp here with the Warriors,” Metcalf explained.

“The way the New Zealand public have taken me in has been unreal. I came here with my partner, we’ve had a baby, and we’ve created a home away from home here. I love the whole place — the Warriors, New Zealand in general, Auckland. We even had our wedding in Queenstown,” he added.

Warriors CEO Cameron George praised the signing, describing it as a key moment for the club and a crucial move to prevent Metcalf from hitting the open market on November 1, where he would have been one of the NRL’s hottest targets.

“We’re absolutely thrilled Luke will be with us for another three seasons,” George said. “It’s a critical signing which underlines how much Luke means to us and equally how much the club means to him and his family.”

Before his season-ending ACL injury in Round 17 against Brisbane, Metcalf was one of the form players of 2025, sitting atop the Dally M leaderboard when voting went behind closed doors. Despite missing the final nine rounds, he still finished eighth overall with 41 points.

Warriors head coach Andrew Webster said the extension was a reward for Metcalf’s influence and leadership, praising the 26-year-old’s growth and future potential.

Since arriving from Cronulla, where he played just seven games, Metcalf has made 34 appearances for the Warriors with an impressive 68 percent winning rate. His creativity, kicking game, and composure have made him a cornerstone of the club’s rebuild.

The Warriors view Metcalf’s re-signing as another major step toward their long-term goal — delivering New Zealand’s first NRL premiership. With his signature now secured, they believe they are one step closer.
