Harry Grant will captain the Kangaroos for the first time as Australia chase a series-clinching win over England in Liverpool this weekend.

The Melbourne Storm hooker takes over from Isaah Yeo, who was ruled out under concussion protocols after a head knock in last week’s 26-6 victory.

Coach Kevin Walters confirmed the news on Tuesday, describing Grant as a “natural leader” and backing him to thrive in the role.

Yeo will remain in camp to support the side as the Kangaroos aim to wrap up the Ashes series with a game to spare.

Walters backs Grant’s leadership

“Harry and all of the senior players for that matter stepped up after Isaah’s unfortunate injury last week,” Walters said.

“While we’d love to have Isaah out there, he’ll still be contributing in many other ways around the group this week.

“He’s a natural leader and so too is Harry, so we’re in great hands this week.

“I’m really pleased with the way we’ve started the series, but we’re into a new week now and our focus is preparing well and being at our very best this Saturday.”

Smith returns as Yeo replacement

Penrith forward Lindsay Smith will come into the 17 for his second Test, after impressing on debut in last year’s Pacific Championships final.

The Kangaroos will hold their captain’s run in Liverpool on Friday ahead of the second Test at Hill Dickinson Stadium, where they can secure their first Ashes triumph in 22 years.
