From Perth to Buffalo: Mitch Wishnowsky gets NFL recall with AFC No.1 seed Bills image

The Buffalo Bills will debut their third punter of the season, turning to Australian veteran Mitch Wishnowsky after Cameron Johnston's ankle injury.

Johnston, injured against the Saints when a defender crashed into him mid-punt, was placed on injured reserve.

Enter Wishnowsky, a Perth native with six years of NFL experience. He spent his entire career with the San Francisco 49ers until earlier this season.

The Aussie special teamer has built a reputation for having a massive boot and surgical placement, often burying opponents inside their own 20-yard-line.

His journey is as unlikely as it is inspiring. Once a tradie installing glass, Wishnowsky found the gridiron through Victoria's ProKick Academy.

The 33-year-old  developed his kicking abilities for both the Santa Barbara City Vaqueros and Utah Utes programs.

Wishnowsky was then drafted with the 110th overall pick in the 2019 draft to the 49ers, where he played in Super Bowl LIV in his first season.

In 2022, he led the league by dropping more than half his punts inside the 20, an efficiency matched by very few specialists.

Wishnowsky briefly spent time on the Commanders practice squad at the beginning of the 2025 campaign.

Now joining the Bills, who have struggled for stability at the position, he will have the chance to play a major role on the best team currently in the AFC through four weeks.
