Cowboys vs. Cardinals results: Jacoby Brissett stays hot for Arizona in win, Dallas defense needs trade deadline boost image

JUMP TO:

The Arizona Cardinals went into Jerry World in Week 9 and picked up a huge win over the Dallas Cowboys. The Cardinals went into the weekend knowing that Jacoby Brissett was starting, but the reports were that Kyler Murray would "have a role."

When the dust settled on Arizona's 27-17 win, Murray had been ruled inactive, and Brissett orchestrated a huge win. The Cardinals will relish in the victory on Monday night, but now the organization could have a quarterback controversy on its hands with Murray nearing a return and Brissett looking way better in the offensive game plan.

Dallas is in trouble. The loss moves the Cowboys to 3-4-1. Dallas' offense had been its strong suit with the defense consistently coming up short. After going for it deep in Arizona territory on their first drive, the Cowboys ' offense consistently stalled and struggled. Dallas had a turnover late, and its comeback hopes were dashed. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones keeps teasing that the franchise could be active ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline with many thinking Dallas will make a move for an impact player on defense.

FINAL SCORE -- Cardinals 27, Cowboys 17

Fourth Quarter

11:12 p.m. -- Dallas takes over with 2:31 left in the game with no timeouts and down 10. Prescott gets swarmed and is sacked for a nine-yard loss. Prescott then launched a ball to Lamb, but overshot him by about 10 yards to bring up the two-minute warning.

On the other side of the break, Prescott is sacked again, for another nine-yard loss. On fourth and 28, he throws it into a sea of Cardinals defenders and it is picked off. The game will end after the Cardinals kneel it out a few times.

11:06 p.m. -- Demercado ran for six yards on first down, and then broke one to the left for 19 yards and went down in bounds to keep the clock running. Dallas was forced to use its second timeout of the half. The running back picked up two yards, and the Cowboys used its final timeout with 4:10 left in the game.

Demercado lost four yards, and then Brissett got those four yards back on the next play. On fourth and eight, the Arizona offense decided to stay out on the field. Brissett went for Harrison Jr. But then missed him. It's a turnover on downs.

11:01 p.m. -- Prescott scrambled up the middle and picked up five. He then hits Pickens on the sideline for a first down. The Dallas wide receiver appeared to show the ball to the defender who didn't stop him, and he got flagged for taunting. After that play, Prescott ran for a 14-yard gain. He then hit Lamb for seven yards.

Arizona jumped offsides, and with the free play, Prescott hit Pickens for 11 yards. This got the Cowboys to the 35-yard line with 5:48 left in the game. Prescott was sacked by Arizona rookie Walter Nolen in his first career game. Scrambling, Prescott passed and hit Turpin for four yards.

Prescott checked down to Williams. The running back fought to get to the sideline, and he was stripped of the ball before he hit the ground. Arizona's defense got a huge turnover.

10:52 p.m. -- With the Dallas defense needing a stop, Brissett gets sacked for a loss of nine on first down. On second down, though, the quarterback hit McBride for a 19-yard gain and the first down.

Knight then gets stopped for no gain. Brissett is sacked again, this time for a loss of eight. On third and 18, there was a false start, bringing up third and 23. Brissett checked down for a screen pass, but it was instantly scouted by Dallas for no gain.

TOUCHDOWN -- Cardinals 27, Cowboys 17

10:43 p.m. -- Prescott missed Lamb on first down and scrambled on second to pick up six. The Dallas QB then hit Ryan Flournoy for an important first down. He found Pickens for a gain of 16, but he fumbled. Luckily for Dallas, it was scooped by Williams. Prescott then hit Pickens for 19 yards.

Williams finally found some daylight, picking up 19 yards. Prescott looks to the endzone and finds Flournoy for the Cowboys' first offensive touchdown of the night.

It's now a 10 point game and Dallas needs its defense to get another stop.

10:33 p.m. -- Brissett connects with McBride to begin the drive, picking up seven. Knight picked up a yard on second down. On third and short, Brissett was sacked and Dallas got a much-needed stop.

Prescott hit Lamb 10 yards, but then Williams ran for no gain, Prescott was sacked for a loss of nine and then only connected with Turpin for five yards to bring up fourth down.

Unlike the first drive of the game, Dallas opted to kick a 26-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14.

Brissett missed McBride on first down. Greg Dortch then picked up nine on an end-around. Knight only needed one for the first down, but picked up five yards for the fresh set of downs.

Knight didn't pick up any yards on first down, but Brissett punched it in himself.

TOUCHDOWN -- Cardinals 10, Cowboys 7

9:17 p.m. -- Demercado starts the drive after the turnover with a one-yard run. Brissett hit McBride for 10 yards, but then missed him on the next play. Arizona went to punt the ball, but it was blocked and returned for a touchdown by Dallas.

9:08 p.m. -- Williams picked up two yards on first down and Prescott connected with Pickens for 12 yards on the next play. Williams had three yards and then Lamb had five yards on a wild play that it was impressive he managed to not lose yards. On third and two, the running back got the carry and picked up five yards and the first down.

Prescott then picked up nine on the ground. The quarterback then missed Lamb on a deep pass to the endzone. Williams then picked up three and Turpin added three more on an end around. An eight-yard gain by Pickens was wiped out by a Ferguson hold.

8:44 p.m. -- Williams begins Dallas' second drive with a three-yard carry. Prescott then missed KaVontae Turpin on second down. He hit Lamb for the first down, but it was called back due to holding. Prescott then tried to hit Pickens, but his arm was hit when he threw it and it luckily fell to the turf.

The Cowboys punted, but not after a false start pushed them further back.

The running back then lost a yard on first down, but Prescott got it back with a five-yard pass to tight end Jake Ferguson. Prescott missed his tight end again on third down, but Dallas decided to go for it on fourth and goal from the four-yard line. The quarterback got sacked.

Pre-Game

8:15 p.m. -- The Cardinals won the toss and are deferring to the second half. The Cowboys will get the ball first.

7:59 p.m. -- Halloween was last Friday, but Solomon Thomas is keeping the spooky season alive. He arrived to the game channeling his "Star Wars" fandom.

7:50 p.m. -- Less than 30 minutes from kickoff and Dallas' backup quarterback Joe Milton is doing backflips on the field during warmups.

7:40 p.m. -- Arizona will be wearing red jerseys and red panthers with a white helmet.

Dallas will counter with white jerseys and silver pants. The Cowboys will wear their iconic silver helmets, but they have red, white and blue stripes down the center of the helmet.

7:18 p.m. -- Part of the adversity that Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has dealt with in his life is the loss of his mother Peggy. She passed away to her battle with cancer in 2013. Prescott took the field early to say a prayer for his mother, who passed away tragically 12 years ago to the day as the game against Arizona.

6:50 p.m. -- Inactives for the game have been announced.

Arizona

Dallas

6:10 p.m. --  Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray was expected to still "have a role" in Monday night's game despite not starting. ESPN Insider Jeremy Fowler reported before the game, however, that that is unlikely and Murray isn't expected to play at all. If he gets ruled out, Kedon Slovis would back up Jacoby Brissett.

We will know Murray's official status for the game when the information is released around 6:45 p.m. ET.
