Chiefs vs. Bills final score, results: Josh Allen's efficient day helps Buffalo survive Patrick Mahomes' comeback attempt image

JUMP TO:

In their history of dramatic, down-to-the-wire matchups, Josh Allen's Buffalo Bills came into Sunday 4-1 all-time against Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs in the regular season. The playoffs, of course, have been another question.

But yet again, Allen bested Mahomes for a regular-season win in Week 9.

Allen's three total touchdowns paved the way for Buffalo at home in a 28-21 takedown of the red-hot Chiefs, as Mahomes' Hail Mary attempt fell short as time expired. The Bills' defense got key stops against Mahomes all afternoon — Kansas City's quarterback completed just 15 of his 34 pass attempts, being sacked three times with one interception in a rare lackluster performance.

Between the pressure from Sean McDermott's defense, effective pass-breakups and 141 total yards on the ground between Allen (19 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns) and James Cook (114 rushing yards), the Bills played to their winning formula in the high-profile matchup. Allen only had three incomplete passes among his 26 attempts, with completions to 10 different receivers.

Most of the offense came in the first half. Kansas City did make things interesting with a Kareem Hunt touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, but with a few fourth-quarter stops against Mahomes, the Bills kept up with the coasting New England Patriots in the AFC East, improving to 6-2 this season as the Chiefs fell to 5-4.

AllSportsPeople tracked updates and highlights from throughout the Chiefs-Bills showdown, as Allen bested Mahomes in the regular season once again. Here's how Buffalo came out on top in Week 9.

Chiefs vs. Bills updates, highlights from NFL Week 9 game

All times ET.

Final: Bills 28, Chiefs 21

7:26 p.m. —  The Bills win! Mahomes' Hail Mary attempt falls short, with a crowd of defenders batting the ball onto the ground to protect the lead. Josh Allen had a nice day, outclassing Mahomes, and Buffalo is 6-2.

7:25 p.m. —  Mahomes' first few plays lead to a third down with three seconds left. He'll attempt a Hail Mary.

7:22 p.m. — Buckle up. Buffalo reached a 4th & 6 with under a minute remaining and had to attempt a virtual game-ending field goal from Matt Prater, but the kicker doinks the ball off the right upright.

Mahomes and the Chiefs get the ball back with a chance to tie with seven points and win with eight points. 22 seconds remain.

7:16 p.m. — The Bills could be on their way to a win, should they hold onto the football. James Cook is running well to give Buffalo some first downs. He's at 111 rushing yards today, another great performance for the running back.

7:13 p.m. —  Another defensive injury for the Bills today: Michael Hoecht. Still, he remained on the bench with his squad:

7:10 p.m. —  Picked off! Mahomes went deep, trying to get a big play from Xavier Worthy, and it wound up in the hands of rookie Maxwell Hairston. The Bills take over, with a chance to win this game if they can get 4:18 off the clock.

7:07 p.m. —  An eight-yard Kareem Hunt run and a 13-yard Travis Kelce snag have the Chiefs on the move. Can Mahomes tie this game, or take the lead, on the road with under five minutes left?

7:01 p.m. —  Naturally, the Chiefs are going to have a chance to tie this ballgame. Josh Allen and the Bills tried to eat some clock, but lasted just under five minutes before they were forced to punt. Kansas City gets consecutive sacks from Trent McDuffie and Leo Chenal to force the punt.

Bills 28, Chiefs 21

6:53 p.m. TOUCHDOWN —  Kansas City got another fourth down on its long drive, a 4th & 1 from the two-yard line... And there isn't much drama this time. Kareem Hunt punches it into the end zone. Andy Reid opts to go for two with a 28-19 deficit, and that pays off as well, with Travis Kelce securing the catch in the end zone.

The Chiefs trail by seven.

6:48 p.m. —  In a fairly stunning call, the Chiefs go for a 4th & 17 on the Bills' 40-yard line. Of course, it worked out. Mahomes went deep for Rashee Rice, and his top receiver hauls in a 29-yard catch to move the Chiefs into the red zone. They can make it a one-score game, and that was the longest fourth-down conversion of Mahomes' career.

6:44 p.m. —  Joey Bosa gets another Bills sack to open the fourth. He sets Kansas City back nine yards with a takedown of Mahomes. Offenisve lineman Jawaan Taylor is down after the play for the Chiefs.

End of third quarter: Bills 28, Chiefs 13

6:41 p.m. —  The Chiefs are gonna need to pick it up quickly to get back in this game, and Mahomes gives them a start there before the third quarter ends. On 3rd & 10, he hits Brown for 33 yards to get the first down. Still, Buffalo is in command with 15 minutes remaining.

Bills 28, Chiefs 13

6:32 p.m. TOUCHDOWN —  Josh Allen and the Bills have historically played well against the Chiefs in the regular season. That's continued today. While the playoff woes are a conversation for later, Allen has been close to dominant in Week 9; he scores his second "Tush Push" touchdown to extend the lead.

It's a 15-point advantage at home for Buffalo, using chunk plays from Elijah Moore and Keon Coleman to get down the field.

6:25 p.m. —  Another terrific sequence for McDermott's defense. Mahomes got called for intentional grounding, and on the following 3rd & 16 play, Michael Hoecht and Greg Rousseau bring pressure to bring down the Chiefs quarterback. Buffalo's second sack today forces another KC punt.

6:23 p.m. —  The Chiefs are on the move, thanks to another Mahomes-Kelce connection.

6:17 p.m. —  Another note on Allen's rushing score earlier: He now has surpassed Cam Newton for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, including playoffs, in NFL history. It's No. 78.

6:16 p.m. —  The Chiefs get one of their best stops of the game, holding Buffalo's drive to eight plays before a 4th & 9 results in a punt. It's been mostly smooth sailing for the Bills offense, but the Chiefs still find themselves within one score.

6:15 p.m. —  James Cook is up to 71 rushing yards, while Kincaid has 92 receiving yards. They've led the way for Josh Allen today.

6:07 p.m. —  The Bills' defense is putting together a nice outing against a red-hot Chiefs offense. It's a three-and-out for Mahomes to open the second half — according to ESPN, today marked the first time since 2020 that Mahomes completed less than 50% of his passes in a first half.

6:04 p.m. —  Kansas City gets the ball to begin the half, able to tie it up with a touchdown and two-point conversion.

5:53 p.m. —  The quarterback battle at the break, in yet another chapter of Allen vs. Mahomes:

Patrick Mahomes: 7/15, 123 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs

Josh Allen: 15/17, 176 yards, 1 passing TD, 0 INTs, 1 rushing TD

Halftime: Bills 21, Chiefs 13

5:46 p.m. FIELD GOAL —  Buffalo's defense bends, but doesn't break. Despite the Chiefs getting all the way to the one-yard line, they have to settle for a field goal before halftime. Kareem Hunt couldn't punch one in, then Mahomes failed to complete a pass on the following end zone tries. Instead of a four-point deficit, Kansas City faces an eight-point deficit entering the break.

5:43 p.m. —  The Chiefs were given 1:33 to get points before halftime. Already, they're making that look like way too much time. Mahomes first connects with Travis Kelce for the first time today, for 20 yards, then goes deep down the right sideline just in front of the end zone to Hollywood Brown.

Kansas City, all of a sudden, can shorten its deficit after just three plays.

Bills 21, Chiefs 10

5:37 p.m. TOUCHDOWN —  Josh Allen's "Tush Push" attempt is successful. It's now his 47th career game with a rushing and passing touchdown, the most in NFL history, and it gives the Bills an 11-point lead with halftime approaching.

5:35 p.m. —  Shakir already has five catches for Buffalo, but the team's tight ends are leading the way. Dawson Knox goes for 30 yards to set up 1st & Goal, and he's the third Bills tight end with a catch today.

5:26 p.m. —  Buffalo gets a big fourth down stop, taking over in its own territory after Andy Reid went for a 4th & 3. Once again, Mahomes targeted Rice, but it falls incomplete. The Bills will get around four minutes to extend their lead before halftime.

5:22 p.m. —  The Chiefs' offense has been all about Rashee Rice and the run game. With under five minutes left in the half, five different players have combined for 56 Kansas City rushing yards on 11 carries, while Rice has three catches for 50 yards.

Bills 14, Chiefs 10

5:15 p.m. TOUCHDOWN —  Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes are trading scores early. A 47-yard catch from Kincaid sets up a Ty Johnson rushing score, and the Bills reclaim the lead in the first half.

Chiefs 10, Bills 7

5:09 p.m. FIELD GOAL —  The Bills' defense gets a key stop on 3rd & 12, tackling Xavier Worthy short of the sticks. Harrison Butker hits a 46-yard field goal through the uprights, and the Chiefs have taken the lead in Buffalo.

5:08 p.m. —  A 24-yard Rashee Rice catch and a hole for Kareem Hunt has put the Chiefs within scoring range once again. Hunt has 27 yards on his four carries.

5:03 p.m. —  Now, the Bills go three-and-out. Kansas City will have a chance to jump on top after the early deficit.

Bills 7, Chiefs 7

4:54 p.m. TOUCHDOWN —  Andy Reid utilizes some simple trickery. With Mahomes lined up to his left, Rashee Rice takes the snap, then immediately runs up the middle on 1st & Goal to tie the game. They're all knotted up in Buffalo.

End of first quarter: Bills 7, Chiefs 0

4:51 p.m. —  At the end of the first frame, Buffalo is holding onto the early lead. The Chiefs are threatening though, seven plays into their second drive with 21 yards on the ground.

4:44 p.m. —  With his early lead, Sean McDermott was feeling confident in the first quarter. Sitting around midfield at 4th & 2, he opted to go for it. But Allen's pass to Shakir is short in the middle of the field — and the Chiefs will take over with some nice field position for their second drive.

4:39 p.m. —  It's an opening three-and-out for Mahomes and the Chiefs. The quarterback's first two passes fell incomplete, including a 3rd & 7 look for Rashee Rice.

Bills 7, Chiefs 0

4:35 p.m. TOUCHDOWN —  It took around seven minutes, but the Bills capitalize on their opening drive. Josh Allen connects with Dalton Kincaid on third down for a 23-yard score, and the Bills take the first lead after meticulously picking the Chiefs' defense apart.

4:31 p.m. —  Buffalo is off to a strong start offensively. On its opening drive, James Cook has a quick 28 rushing yards, while Allen's first three passes were completed, all to Khalil Shakir.
