Matthew Stafford didn't win a Super Bowl with the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2009, but it's fair to call his NFL career a validation of the high expectations that followed him into the league.

Stafford posted seven consecutive 4,000-yard seasons in Detroit, helping dig the Lions out of an 0-16 hole after he was drafted, and he went on to win a championship in his first season after a trade to the Rams

With 60,000 yards and 400 touchdowns on the horizon for the veteran, Stafford has a strong Hall of Fame case — and his family has stayed close by his side as he's built it.

Here's a complete look at Stafford's family, from his wife to his football-playing relatives.

Matthew Stafford wife: Kelly Stafford

Stafford married his wife, Kelly, in April 2015, and she remained a major part of his public profile during his transition from the Lions to the Rams.

Kelly admitted on her podcast that her marriage with Matthew hasn't been short of challenges. "I will say, there have been so many ups and downs in our marriage. There really has," she said. "I would say the first year of marriage was really, really hard. It’s crazy because nothing really changed in our lives. We were kind of already living together but that was our first big thing thrown our way, IVF, infertility."

Kelly has been open about her use of in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive, and she and Matthew now have four daughters as a result.

Georgia cheerleader

Matthew and Kelly first met at the University of Georgia, where she was a cheerleader while he shined for the football team.

While she met her husband as a cheerleader, Kelly revealed on her podcast in 2025 that she struggled with her self-image during her cheerleading days. "I always tried to be small," she said, also explaining that her struggles with food and self-image continued after college.

Overcoming brain tumor

Kelly was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in early 2019 after her husband completed his 10th season in the NFL. While the tumor wasn't cancerous, Kelly needed to undergo a major surgery to remove it. She was able to make a full recovery despite the risky procedure, which could have impacted her ability to hear or fully control her face.

Matthew was incredible during the whole process," Kelly told ESPN. "He was literally by my side at every step."

Podcasting

Kelly launched her podcast, "The Morning After with Kelly Stafford & Hank," with local Detroit TV reporter Hank Winchester in 2023.

The duo shares stories about "life and raising kids," according to the show's description on Apple Podcasts, though Kelly herself has occasionally stirred controversy with comments made on the podcast.

Kelly drew backlash from Taylor Swift fans after remarking in 2024 that she believed Swift was taking too much attention away from the product on the field, though she seemed to blame the NFL rather than Swift herself. In early 2025, Kelly said she had received hurtful messages as a result. "I have feelings, and I’m not going to sit here and act like I don’t," she said, calling some of the comments "mean."

In July 2025, Winchester took time away from the podcast while under investigation for allegedly making unwanted sexual advances during a professional massage.

Matthew Stafford daughters

Sawyer and Chandler Stafford

After dealing with fertility issues, Matthew and Kelly Stafford welcomed twin girls named Sawyer and Chandler into the world in early 2017. Kelly has shared pictures of the girls dressed in Georgia cheerleading uniforms, so they could follow in their mother's footsteps when they head to college.

Hunter Hope Stafford

Kelly gave birth to another girl, Hunter Hope Stafford, in August 2018, just a few weeks before the start of Matthew's 10th NFL season.

Tyler Stafford

The Stafford family welcomed a fourth daughter, Tyler, in June 2020.

While Matthew said having a baby during the COVID-19 pandemic brought "all sorts of new challenges" compared to their first three children, Tyler rounded out the family and officially left her father completely outnumbered.

Here's a full look at the Stafford family in 2025:

Matthew Stafford dad: John Stafford

Stafford's father, John, also attended the University of Georgia after a his undergraduate days at Florida State, but football wasn't his calling. John instead found a home in the pool as a competitive swimmer and got back into competitive swimming in his 70s in the early 2020s.

After a minor heart attack slowed him down in 2021, John stuck with swimming and won a U.S. Masters championship in the 1000m freestyle by 2023.

Matthew was in attendance when his father competed in 2023. "It’s a lot of fun to be able to come watch him do his thing," the Rams quarterback told U.S. Masters Swimming. "I obviously haven’t gotten the chance to do it. He was obviously at a million of my games growing up, so I’m happy to be here just watching him do his thing."

Matthew Stafford's mom: Margaret Stafford

Stafford's mother, Margaret, has been a consistent presence at his games and explained before Super Bowl 56 that her son was focused on football even in his youngest years.

"Loved having a ball, always had to have a ball," she said. "No Legos in our house."

While not much is known about Margaret's background, she continues to show up and support Matthew even in the latter stages of his career.

Matthew Stafford brother-in-law: Chad Hall

Stafford's brother-in-law — Kelly's brother — is former NFL wide receiver Chad Hall. Hall, who grew up in Georgia but spent his college days at the Air Force Academy, went undrafted in 2008 but latched on with the Eagles, 49ers and Chiefs from 2010-13. He appeared in 24 games, including 15 with the Eagles.

A collegiate star, Hall put up 2,002 scrimmage yards and 16 touchdowns in Air Force's run-heavy attack during his senior season in 2007.

Hall spent time as a wide receivers coach with the Bills and Jaguars before joining the Giants as assistant quarterbacks coach in 2025.

Matthew Stafford godson: Dylan Raiola

Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola has taken some heat for his emulation of Patrick Mahomes, but he actually has a much closer connection to Stafford. The Rams star is Raiola's godfather because of his close relationship with Dominic Raiola, Dylan's father. Raiola spent his entire 14-year career with the Lions as a center, including six years snapping the ball to Stafford.

While Raiola isn't technically related to Stafford as his godson, he considers Stafford part of his family and could enter the NFL around the same time the Rams quarterback is wrapping up his own career.

Matthew Stafford sister: Page Stafford

Stafford's sister, Page, also attended the University of Georgia. She lists herself as a marketing manager at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel. Page is married and has children, according to her social media profiles, but no information about her husband is publicly known.

Where is Matthew Stafford from?

Stafford was born in Tampa but moved to Dunwoody, Ga., as a young child while his father finished a degree at the University of Georgia.

By high school, Stafford and his family moved to the Dallas area. Stafford attended Highland Park High School, where he famously became friends with another future Hall of Fame athlete: Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

Stafford and his wife currently live in a $28 million mansion in Hidden Hills, Calif., just outside of Los Angeles. The home was formerly owned by singer and actress Jennifer Lopez.
