New Year's Resolutions for the AFC South

As the year winds down, people tend to reflect. They look at what they accomplished, what they did not achieve and things they could have done better. And some people even write down things they want to accomplish or do better in the year to come. Plenty call them New Year’s Resolutions. So, with that being said, the Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars all have things they may be thinking about, taking note of, and want to improve on as the 2025 season nears its end.  Here are some of my thoughts on what the resolution should be for each team in 2026.

Tennessee Titans: Put Together Two Halves

The Tennessee Titans grew as the season went on. There were highs, lows and everything in between. There were also many young or inexperienced players playing key positions, especially at cornerback and wide receiver. But along with that, the consistency was not there for them all season. There were moments when the team was clicking, and others when they could not.

So for the 2026 season, the Titans will want to find that complementary football that quarterback Cam Ward and defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons talk about at times during press conferences or media sessions. The more they can find that and execute consistently, the better the team will be and the better the results could be. But instead, there were results like Week 17 against the Saints, when they were up by 10 at halftime, and things did not look the same after that. Consistency is key.

Jacksonville Jaguars:  Find Consistency and Keep It

The Jacksonville Jaguars are surging going into the playoffs. After a bad loss to the Houston Texans, where they had a big lead late in the third quarter, the Jaguars have pulled off seven straight wins. The defense has been good, and Trevor Lawrence has found some consistency that looks different from the ebbs and flows he usually shows. And currently, the Jaguars do have a shot at finishing with the number one overall seed. But alas, there is one word that always comes to mind with the Jaguars: consistency.

The Jaguars have had high highs and low lows over the last couple of seasons. And in the successes, they failed to capture that consistency. This year they have found it, but the question always remains amongst those that watch them and even some of their fans is if they can keep the consistency. To be the team they want to be, they have to find out how to keep it and cultivate a culture. We shall see if 2026 brings that for them.

Indianapolis Colts: Make Sure To Prepare For All Things

The Indianapolis Colts started this season on fire, going 8-2 before the bye week. Unfortunately, after that, they were unable to keep the momentum going amid injuries, and their offensive line play slumped; they missed the playoffs this season. The seesaw of emotion has some Colts fans in disbelief that they are not going to the postseason, while others have questions about this team. After all, they did give up two first-round picks to get star cornerback Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets as they were going all in around the time they had one of the best records in the NFL. But there is one thing they did not do.

The Colts did not account for everything that could have happened, especially in the quarterback room. Despite how things were going with Daniel Jones at quarterback, he has not made it through many seasons healthy. And with that being known, the Colts could have gotten a more dependable backup. But they chose not to, and with that, Jones got injured, Riley Leonard stepped in to finish the game he was injured in, and Philip Rivers was brought out of retirement to lead this team. It did not work out, and now the Colts have another interesting offseason at quarterback. Hopefully, the Colts and their fans will handle it better this offseason.

Houston Texans: Build It Better On The Front Line

The Houston Texans did not start the season off great, opening 0-3. But they found their way and caught fire down the stretch, winning eight straight games and clinching a playoff berth in their win against the Los Angeles Chargers. Along this wild ride of a season for the Texans, their defense has been downright scary to some. With the pass-rushers they have, along with the linebackers and their impressive secondary, the Texans' defense could carry them a long way. But on the other side of the ball, there are some issues.

One issue that has been front and center all season is the offensive line's play. The Texans have been inconsistent running the football all year and the protection for CJ Stroud has not exactly been the greatest at all time. Going into this offseason, it is good to have the defense they have, but they do need to invest more in their offensive line and don’t just get bodies; they need bodies who can consistently do the job required.

As 2025 comes to an end, it will be interesting to see how these teams view these resolutions and what other issues they address.
