Shedeur Sanders stats today: Browns rookie gets historic win, Raiders revenge in first NFL start image

JUMP TO:

Shedeur Sanders' first NFL start didn't light up the stat sheet, but he accomplished a far greater feat: he became the first Browns rookie quarterback since 1995 to secure a win in his debut.

In a 24-10 win against the Las Vegas Raiders, Sanders finished completing 11-of-20 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Browns defense dominated the day, sacking Geno Smith 10 times as the Browns maintained a comfortable lead throughout.

The Browns opened the scoring in the first quarter with a Quinshon Judkins wildcat touchdown — which came after a 44-yard punt return set Cleveland up deep in opponent territory — and Judkins added another after Sanders completed a 53-yard bomb to Isaiah Bond to get them inside the five. After that, Cleveland maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

Sanders’ first touchdown came in the fourth quarter, where he dumped the ball off to Sampson on a 3rd & 9, and the rookie back from Tennessee took it all the way to the end zone for a 66-yard score. The quarterback looked calmer throughout the day, making some big throws, including to Bond to set up the second Judkins touchdown and a 33-yard completion to Jerry Jeudy, who fumbled on the play.

With the win, Sanders becomes the first Browns rookie quarterback since 1995 to win his first NFL start as Cleveland advanced to 3-8 on the season. With his father, Deion Sanders in attendance, Shedeur got the job done.

How   did Shedeur Sanders play today?

Sanders secured a historic 24-10 victory over the Raiders in his first NFL start for the Browns. The win marked a significant achievement, as he became the first Browns rookie quarterback since 1995 to win his debut start. Despite the victory, the Browns offense was largely supported by a dominant defense that recorded 10 sacks.

Sanders' final stat line was modest but featured some key highlights. He completed 11-of-20 passes for 209 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. His first career touchdown pass came on a 66-yard screen pass to Sampson in the fourth quarter. He also made a few big throws, including a 53-yard completion to Bond — which was the longest of the season for the Browns and helped set up a touchdown run.

The rookie was calmer than his previous relief appearance, but the win was a team effort. The Browns defense maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game, nabbing 10 sacks (the highest for an NFL team this season), allowing Sanders to manage the game without needing a heroic performance. The most crucial takeaway from the day was the historic victory, achieved with his father, Deion Sanders, in attendance.

Shedeur Sanders live updates, highlights from Browns vs. Raiders

Sanders, Browns get win in first NFL start

7:14 p.m.:  The clock has hit zeroes in Sin City, and Shedeur Sanders has his first win as an NFL starter.

The rookie finished the day completing 11-of-20 passes for 209 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He is the first Browns rookie quarterback to win his first start since 1995.

Whether the Shedeur Sanders era is long or short, today will be remembered as the day he got his first NFL win.

7:12 p.m.:  After dwindling the clock down to inside a minute, the Browns punt once again to nail Las Vegas inside the 10.

7:08 p.m.:  Sanders draws an offsides penalty on Las Vegas, giving Cleveland a new set of downs at the two-minute warning.

Sanders is minutes away from his first win as a NFL starter.

7:04 p.m.:  Myles Garrett is one of the best defensive players on Earth, and he gets to Smith fast and strips the ball.

It's immediately recovered by Cleveland, and this game looks to be over with 2:10 remaining.

7:00 p.m.:  Sanders and the Browns go three-and-out as the clock ticks inside the 4:30 mark.

Las Vegas will take back over, down 14.

6:54 p.m.:  Las Vegas gets into the end zone for the first time today.

On 4th & 2, Smith hits Ashton Jeanty in the flat and the rookie scores a touchdown to make it 24-10.

With 5:11 remaining, Sanders and the Browns offense will take back over up 14.

Sanders throws first NFL touchdown

6:44 p.m.:  Sanders has the first touchdown pass of his NFL career.

On 3rd & 9, he hit Sampson out of the backfield on a halfback screen, and No. 22 takes it all the way to the end zone for a 66-yard score. Cleveland now leads 24-3 with 8:18 remaining.

Sanders is over 200 yards passing and has a cherry on top in his first game as a starter.

6:39 p.m.:  Las Vegas has been stifled all game by the Browns defense, and once again the Raiders are forced to punt.

With 9:21 remaining, Sanders and the Browns will take over at their own 33.

6:31 p.m.:  After a holding penalty and a backwards play made it 3rd & 27, Sanders tries finding Tillman deep downfield but overthrows him.

But, the offense gets on the board. Cleveland hits a 53-yard field goal to make it 17-3.

6:28 p.m.:  After an unnecessary roughness gave the Browns a new set of downs, rookie running back Dylan Sampson broke the longest run of the game for Cleveland, taking it 26 yards.

Cleveland is inside the red zone.

6:23 p.m.:  At the end of three, Sanders and the Browns lead 14-3 in a game that has been about the defenses.

With the Cleveland defense allowing only three points, Sanders has not had to be heroic. Outside of the turnover, he has had a stable game in his first NFL start, and is 15 minutes away from his first win as a starter.

6:18 p.m.:  Once again, the Raiders come up empty.

Smith tries finding Tre Tucker in the end zone but it comes up incomplete. Sanders and The Browns take back over right above the 20.

6:08 p.m.:  The Raiders defense gets a stop on 3rd & 8, rushing Sanders immediately as he throws the ball short of a receiver.

Both defenses have been dominating the game, with two chunk plays by Cleveland, which set up the touchdowns, being the difference.

6:06 p.m.:  Facing a 3rd & 12 deep in his own territory, Sanders flips one to Fanin — who was on a delayed fade route — and the tight end rumbles for 15 yards and a first down.

It's only the fifth first down of the game for the Browns offense.

6:01 p.m.:  The Browns defense once again forces a punt, giving Sanders and the offense a comfortable lead as they take the field again.

It's 14-3 with 8:05 left in the third.

5:53 p.m.:  On 3rd & long, Sanders finds Malachi Corley for eight yards, but it's short of the sticks.

Though Cleveland is across midfield facing a 4th & 3, Kevin Stefanski opts to punt.

5:47 p.m.:  On 4th & 4 just above midfield, the Browns defense gets to Smith and the Raiders come up scoreless to open the second half.

Sanders and the Browns will take over with 10:59 left in the third.

5:41 p.m.:  The second half is underway in Las Vegas.

The Raiders will get the ball first, trailing by 11.

Sanders, Browns lead at halftime

5:28 p.m.:  Sanders kneels, and Cleveland goes into the locker room up 14-3.

While the quarterback has no touchdowns and one interception, he has played well enough outside of the turnover. He has completed 7-of-11 passes for 127 yards and the pick.

5:23 p.m.:  On 3rd and 9, Sanders hits Fanin, but it's short of the sticks.

The Browns punted back to Las Vegas, with just under two minutes left in the first half.

5:16 p.m.:  Cleveland's defense has performed well to start the game, forcing another three-and-out on the Raiders after the turnover.

After the punt, Sanders and the offense are set up just behind the Cleveland 30.

5:14 p.m.:  Once again, Cleveland turns it over on the first play of the drive. Sanders hits Jeudy this time, and it's a huge completion for 39 yards. But the receiver fumbles it and it's recovered by Las Vegas at the 33-yard line.

Sanders is over 100 yards, but a costly turnover by Jeudy forces the offense off the field.

5:09 p.m.:  While Geno Smith and the Raiders moved the ball a little, the Cleveland defense sacks the quarterback on third down and has to punt.

Sanders will come back on the field with Cleveland up 14-3 and just over four minutes remaining.

5:02 p.m.:  After Las Vegas made it 14-3, Sanders completes his first pass on 2nd & 16, going to Cedric Tillman for five yards.

But, on 3rd & 11, he is flushed out of the pocket and has to throw it away. Cleveland goes three-and-out for the third time.

4:55 p.m.:  Sanders' first throw after the bomb to Bond is an interception.

He was trying to target Jerry Jeudy on a hitch, but it's grabbed by Charles Snowden and it's returned to the Cleveland 26.

4:40 p.m.:  Once again, the Browns opt to go to the wildcat formation right by the end zone.

With Judkins getting the snap, it ends the same way as as the first and Cleveland is up 14-0.

Judkins has two scores, this one set up by the Sanders bomb to Bond.

4:39 p.m.:  Sanders has the first big throw of his NFL career.

On 3rd & 8, the rookie faces pressure immediately from the Raiders front, but is able to roll right and deliver a deep ball to Bond inside the five-yard line.

This one goes for 53 yards down to the Las Vegas two.

4:27 p.m.:  Sanders goes down for the first time today, with Malcom Koonce getting to him for a three-yard loss.

On 3rd & 16, he tries targeting a receiver deep but it goes out of bounds, and Cleveland punts for the second time.

4:17 p.m.:  On 2nd & 5, the Browns opt to keep Sanders off the field, lining up Quinshon Judkins in the backfield.

The rookie running back takes the direct snap and bulldozes into the end zone for an eight-yard score. It's 7-0 Cleveland.

4:16 p.m.:  A 44-yard turnover has set up Sanders and the Browns offense in the red zone.

The game is 0-0, with a prime opportunity for Cleveland to get on the board.

4:08 p.m.:  On 3rd & 8, Sanders hits Isaiah Bond on a curl route near the sticks, but it's not enough for a first down. It goes for six yards, but the Browns send out the punting unit.

Sanders and Cleveland go three-and-out on drive one.

4:07 p.m.:  Sanders' first pass is complete, a screen pass to fellow rookie Harold Fanin Jr. For one yard.

4:06 p.m.:  We are underway in Las Vegas, and the Cleveland offense has the ball first.

Shedeur Sanders is on the field for his first NFl start.
