The Atlanta Falcons are bringing back Matt Ryan.

Don't worry, Falcons fans, the former quarterback is not pulling a Philip Rivers and coming out of retirement. Ryan is being brought back to Atlanta to take over a new position in the front office. 

Following a second consecutive 8-9 season, the Falcons chose to fire both head coach Raheem Morris and GM Terry Fontenot. Ryan is being hired as the new President of Football. Initially, Ryan will help with the searches for a new head coach and GM, but after that, it remains to be seen exactly what his role will entail.

What is Matt Ryan's role with the Falcons

Ryan has been hired to a new role with the Falcons. Atlanta created the President of Football position that will initially help with the search for a new GM and head coach. 

After that, according to a statement from team owner Arthur Blank, Ryan will be charged with setting the "vision and identity for our team." The head coach and GM will report to Ryan and they will work collectively with Ryan having final say on football decisions.

Ryan will also work with President and CEO of the Atlanta Falcons Greg Beadles. Together, Beadles and Ryan are expected to "ensure all resources and operational support are working toward the goal of a winning product on the field, and that we continue to deliver for our fans in every way."

How long did Matt Ryan play for the Falcons?

Ryan played 15 seasons in the NFL. He was drafted with the third overall pick by Atlanta in the 2008 NFL Draft. Ryan spent 14 years with the organization, leaving in 2022 for the Indianapolis Colts

Ryan finally hung up his cleats after the 2022 season, which he spent with the Colts. He then signed a one-day contract with Atlanta on April 22, 2024 to retire as a member of the Falcons.
