How long is Marvin Harrison Jr. out? Cardinals WR sidelined following appendicitis surgery image

Marvin Harrison Jr. Has seen an increased role in the Arizona Cardinals' offense in recent weeks.

In the absence of Kyler Murray, Jacoby Brissett's arm has led both Harrison and tight end Trey McBride to see bigger workloads in the Cardinals' passing game; Harrison posted a career-high seven receptions in a Week 9 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

With Harrison attempting to get back on the star track he was on upon exiting Ohio State, the young receiver faced a setback in Week 11, however. A recent surgery has kept Harrison from appearing in Cardinals games.

Here's what to know about how long Harrison will be sidelined for Arizona.

What happened to Marvin Harrison Jr.?

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Nov. 12 that Harrison had undergone surgery for appendicitis, sidelining the receiver for at least Week 11.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon shared with reporters that Harrison had the surgery days prior and he would be "out."

How long is Marvin Harrison Jr. Out?

Harrison missed his first career game when the Cardinals took on the San Francisco 49ers in Week 11. On Wednesday, Jonathan Gannon ruled Harrison out for Week 12 against the Jacksonville Jaguars as well, per Darren Urban.

The soonest Harrison will be able to return is Week 13 against the Buccaneers.

Harrison played all 17 games in Arizona's 2024 season as a rookie, and appeared in all nine of the Cardinals' first nine games this season. In his Week 11 absence, the team fell 41-22 to the 49ers, even with Jacoby Brissett throwing an NFL record 47 completed passes, with 185 of his 452 yards going to WR2 Michael Wilson.

Per Schefter, Harrison was set to be out for Week 11 "and possibly longer." His timeline will depend on how he recovers from his appendicitis surgery.

According to Cleveland Clinic, undergoing an appendectomy typically results in symptoms being lessened in a "few days," while it may take "a few weeks to return to your normal activities." A full recovery can take an estimated six weeks.

The Cardinals are dealing with some extensive injuries at wide receiver. Not only is the leading receiver, Harrison, set to miss some time, but Zay Jones (Achilles, IR) and Simi Fehoko (wrist, out) both recently became sidelined as well.

Jones' injury was a season-ending torn Achilles, Schefter reported Wednesday. The former Bill, Raider and Jaguar will be out the rest of 2025.

Without Harrison, tight end Trey McBride became even more of a focal point in the passing game than he already was — McBride had four games with at least 10 targets this season entering Week 11, and he then posted 115 yards on 10 receptions against the 49ers.

However, the Cardinals leaned even harder on third-year receiver Michael Wilson in Week 11. Wilson went for a career-high 185 yards on 15 receptions against San Francisco, the highest receiving yards total by any NFL player this season. His breakout came as a direct result of Arizona not having Harrison on the field, and he could be in line for more extensive work in Week 12.

Fifth-year receiver Greg Dortch, who had 66 yards and a touchdown in Week 11, and second-year receiver Xavier Weaver are also options on the depth chart. Additionally, the Cardinals signed receiver Andre Baccellia to their active roster off the practice squad in Week 11, per Schefter.
