In one of the most compelling matchups of the FCS postseason, Stephen F. Austin edged Abilene Christian 41–34 in a back-and-forth contest marked by explosive plays, seven lead changes, and decisive late-game execution. The Lumberjacks’ victory sends them to the quarterfinals and caps a memorable playoff clash between two programs built on contrasting offensive identities. Both teams traded momentum throughout the afternoon, combining for more than 900 yards of offense. Neither side led by more than a single score, and the game remained in doubt until the closing seconds.
SFA quarterback Sam Vidlak delivered a career performance, throwing for 357 yards along with 3 touchdowns while orchestrating an offense that consistently stressed ACU’s secondary. His connection with wideout Kylon Harris, who posted 183 yards on 11 receptions, proved decisive especially in the fourth quarter, when Harris hauled in a spectacular one-handed touchdown grab to give the Lumberjacks the lead for good.
Abilene Christian stayed competitive behind the power and explosiveness of running back Jordon Vaughn, who scored 3 rushing touchdowns, including a 66-yard burst in the fourth quarter that swung momentum back to the Wildcats. Quarterback Stone Earle added steady yardage but struggled at times against increasing late-game defensive pressure.
The opening two quarters showcased the tone of the game: long, methodical drives punctuated by explosive counterpunches. ACU struck first behind Vaughn’s downhill running, but SFA responded with vertical shots and efficient red-zone execution. A late 48-yard field goal allowed the Lumberjacks to enter halftime tied 17–17.
The third quarter continued the back-and-forth rhythm as both teams found ways to sustain drives but struggled to create separation. SFA leaned on its run game to set up manageable passing situations, while ACU mixed in short passes and ground attacks to keep pace.
The fourth quarter elevated the intensity. SFA seized a 31–27 lead before Vaughn’s 66-yard touchdown electrified the Wildcats’ sideline. Yet the Lumberjacks responded immediately with one of the game’s defining sequences which included a 55-yard strike from Vidlak to Harris, followed shortly by Harris’ acrobatic one-handed touchdown in the end zone.
On ACU’s ensuing possession, the SFA defense delivered its biggest moment: an interception by Charles Demmings on third down, setting up a late field goal that extended the lead to seven. The Wildcats had one final chance, but the Lumberjacks produced a sack and a fourth-down stop to seal the win in spectacular fashion.
The victory propels Stephen F. Austin into the FCS quarterfinals, where they will face a physical Montana State team known for its dominant rushing attack. SFA’s ability to contain explosive ground plays and maintain passing efficiency will be central in the next round.
