The Cleveland Cavaliers didn't need more bad news.

But on the way to a 3-1 series deficit to the Pacers, Donovan Mitchell was ruled doubtful to return with an ankle injury. Given the blowout nature of Cleveland's loss, there was never a reason to push it.

Now all eyes for the Cavs turn toward Mitchell's health. Because without him, the daunting prospect of overcoming a 3-1 deficit becomes basically impossible.

It wasn't immediately clear what play Mitchell may have been hurt on.

It's very possible it's been building for a while, especially given the big load he has carried with other teammates hurt.

It may have even been a phantom injury, just a reason not to push him more in a lost cause when Cleveland knows it'll need its superstar the rest of the way.

But whatever the reason, what comes next is even more important.

Mitchell, and his fellow stars Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, need to be as close as full strength as possible. The Cavs have encountered an injury bug at a bad time.

Somehow, they need to get better, and quickly. Because otherwise their season will be over.
