New York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson was an all-star this season, but he has pitched any but an all-star during the second half of the season. Peterson got shelled against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night in a 7-4 loss.
He gave up a grand slam to Manny Machado in the fifth inning. Peterson pitched five innings and gave up six hits and six runs. He also walked three batters and struck out one batter. Over his last eight starts for this team, he has a 7.59 ERA. This is not good for the Mets because there are now questions about him as the 2025 regular season winds down.
New York Mets Fans Don't Want David Peterson as a Starter in the Playoffs
Assuming the Mets hang onto the last wild card spot, there are many questions about what the starting rotation is going to look like in a three-game series. Many fans agree that Nolan McLean has to be the game one starter. After that, it remains to be seen. There are fans who do not want to see Peterson as a starter in the wild card series.
He needs to be taken out of the rotation, he’s no better then Megill or any junk AAA pitcher was have left. Give someone else a chance.

David Peterson went from being the no-doubt-about it Game 1 playoff starter for the Mets to not being good enough to make the roster.

He’ll still make it (if they get there), but he’s been that bad.
David Peterson went from the ace of this team to a totally liability in 2 months

Peterson has fallen off like Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga have. During the playoffs in 2024, he pitched out of the bullpen. There is a good chance that he may have to pitch out of the bullpen again in the playoffs because he has not pitched well down the stretch.
For now, manager Carlos Mendoza has committed to Peterson making his next start in the rotation. If he has another bad start, then there will be many questions to answer after that. His record in 29 games pitched is 9-6 and he also has a 3.98 ERA. In 167.1 innings pitched, he has given up 161 hits and 79 runs, along with 63 walks and 149 strikeouts. His WHIP is 1.34. Peterson's numbers have taken a massive dip big time in the second half of the season.
