Johnathan Thurston has won the Human Rights Medal at the Human Rights Awards in Sydney.

Thurston won the prestigious award for his efforts in improving the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people.
The Cowboys co-captain was nominated on a shortlist alongside Anthony and Chrissie Foster, Dr John Malouf, Sonya Ryan and Ben Quilty.
Thurston is also the 2018 Queensland Australian of the Year.
