The IPL 2025 has ended with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinching their maiden title. Discussions have already begun on the next chapter of the world’s biggest T20 league, where RCB will take the field as the defending champions.
Players and franchises are starting to plan for IPL 2026. And this time, they don’t have to wait long to know when it begins. In a first-of-its-kind move, the IPL governing body had already shared the schedule windows for the next two seasons.
This early announcement offered clarity not just to the teams but also to broadcasters, sponsors, and global players who typically plan their calendars around the tournament. So, when exactly does IPL 2026 begin and how long will it run? Let’s break it down.
When will IPL 2026 start?
IPL 2026 is scheduled to begin on March 15 and will run until May 31 - according to dates communicated to franchises earlier. These dates were termed as "windows" by the IPL, but reports suggest they are likely to hold unless exceptional circumstances arise.
The information was revealed in an email to franchises. With this clarity, teams can begin preparations early - including planning releases before the mini auction and managing player workloads.
Is a longer IPL season on the cards?
Next year's IPL is expected to be longer than the recent editions. The tournament is likely to have 84 matches -- up from the 74 games held annually from 2022 to 2025.
This expansion aligns with what was outlined in the IPL’s media rights tender for the 2023–27 cycle. The final year of the deal - 2027 - is expected to go even further with up to 94 games.
Will overseas players be fully available for IPL 2026?
Most overseas players are expected to be fully available for IPL 2026. National boards of all major Full Member countries (except Pakistan) have reportedly granted clearance for their players to participate throughout the next two seasons.
