The good news is he completed the 3200-metre Melbourne Cup easing down and is expected to be okay.
But Racing Victoria stewards have confirmed last-placed Buckaroo suffered ‘EIPH’, or Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage, during the running of 2025 Melbourne Cup.
More commonly known as a bleeding attack, it is a condition where fragile blood vessels in the lungs rupture during strenuous exercise and it means the seven-year-old gelding could now face a mandatory three-month stand down period.
Should Buckaroo return to the track and suffer another such episode, he would then likely be retired under the rules of Australian racing.

Bred in the United Kingdom, Buckaroo is one of the top weight-for-age race horses in Australia and is trained in Sydney by Chris Waller.
He has had 31 career starts registering five wins, 12 placings and total prize money of more than $3.6 million.
Buckaroo finished a narrow second to stablemate Via Sistina in this year’s W.S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and also ran in last year’s Melbourne Cup, finishing ninth.
