Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler share a number of similarities. Both are standard-bearers of American golf, equipped with all-around skills—and plenty of bravado—to become titans of the sport.
Their trophy cabinets tell impressive stories. Woods boasts 15 major championships. Scheffler is still building his legacy, but with four majors by age 29, he’s well on his way to joining the sport’s elite.
Yet both carry a less flattering reputation: underperforming in the Ryder Cup. Individually, Woods and Scheffler rack up wins, but when wearing red, white, and blue, their results have often fallen short of expectations.
So how do Scheffler and Woods’ Ryder Cup records actually compare? Here’s what you need to know.

Scheffler has posted a 2-4-3 record through nine Ryder Cup matches. He had a strong showing in the 2021 competition, defeating Jon Rahm in singles and teaming with Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland for a four-ball victory. The American duo stumbled slightly in another four-ball match against Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, but still managed to tie the European pairing shot-for-shot.
Scheffler struggled significantly in the 2023 Ryder Cup. Entering the tournament as the world No. 1, he went winless in four matches. Paired with Sam Burns, Scheffler lost their Friday foursomes match to Rahm and Hatton before halving a four-ball contest with Rahm and Nicolai Højgaard, securing just a half-point.

On Day 2, Scheffler and Brooks Koepka struggled mightily. The pairing succumbed to a barrage of bogeys and missed greens, falling 9 and 7 to Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland—marking the worst loss in Ryder Cup history.
Scheffler managed to tie his singles match with Rahm on Sunday, but his earlier struggles, combined with other Americans’ difficulties, contributed to a decisive Team USA loss to Europe.
His first match in the 2025 Ryder Cup did little to ease concerns about his 2023 performance. Paired with Russell Henley, Scheffler lost 5 and 3 to Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick in Friday’s opening foursomes match, one of three defeats Team USA suffered during the session.

1997 Ryder Cup
Woods got his start in the 1997 iteration of the tournament, donning United States' attire mere months after claiming his first major championship at the Masters. He endured a challenging spell in his Ryder Cup debut, suffering three defeats in five matches.
1999 Ryder Cup
Woods was slightly more successful in the 1999 competition, doubling his wins totals courtesy of a foursomes win alongside Stephen Pate and a singles triumph Andrew Coltart. His victories were vital — the United States downed Team Europe by one point, the only Ryder Cup title of Woods' career.
2002 and 2004 Ryder Cups
He combined for four wins in the 2002 and 2004 tournaments, showing flashes of brilliance — and inconsistency. He was expected to do big things with partner Phil Mickelson in 2004. But the highly-touted pairing faltered, falling twice to the Europeans in Day 1 and setting Team Europe up with its largest-ever first-day lead.
2006 Ryder Cup
Woods posted a career-high in tournament victories in 2006, vanquishing Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomerie, Paul McGinley and Robert Karlsson.
2010 Ryder Cup
Woods notched another three victories in 2010, although the United States suffered a one-point defeat Team Europe. He gave the Americans a chance with a critical victory over future Open Championship victor Francesco Molinari, but Hunter Mahan's loss to Graeme McDowell on the final day of the tournament delivered the title back to the Europeans.
In 2012 and 2018, Woods went winless, dropping seven of his eight matches to presumably finish out his Ryder Cup career.

Why was Tiger Woods so bad is Ryder Cups?
Tiger Woods’ Ryder Cup struggles can be attributed to a mix of factors. The tournament’s spot at the end of the golf calendar often left players fatigued, and while Woods possessed both talent and stamina in his prime, he was known for saving his very best for Sundays in his signature red.
Pairings also played a role. Woods and Phil Mickelson were the defining American golfers of their era, yet when they teamed up in Ryder Cup play, the results were disappointing. At the 2004 event, the duo was expected to dominate, but losses to Colin Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington and then Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood put the U.S. in an early hole.
In the grand scope of his glittering career, Woods’ Ryder Cup record remains a footnote. Still, it’s a cautionary tale for Scottie Scheffler, who will hope to avoid the same reputation in one of golf’s crown-jewel competitions.
