Golf developed a playoff system and a championship back in 2007. The format originally consisted of four tournaments for golfers to play in, concluding the golf season. It culminated with the TOUR Championship, and the golfer who made the field for each of the final four tournaments and tallied the cumulative lowest score would be awarded the FedEx Cup.
Starting in 2025, the playoffs consist of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship. Based on the point standings, 70 players are eligible for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The top 50 then advance to the BMW Championship. The top 30 following that tournament are then eligible for the TOUR Championship.
The newest wrinkle is that all golfers entering the TOUR Championship will be on an even playing field. Everyone starts the first round of the TOUR Championship at even par, and it is played as a regular 72-hole event. Nobody brings in previous scores, strokes or points. The player who scores the lowest at the TOUR Championship wins the FedEx Cup.

Rory McIlroy has won the most FedEx Cups with three. He won the 2016, 2019 and 2022 FedEx Cups. Tiger Woods is the only other golfer who has won the championship more than one time. No golfer has won the FedEx Cup in back-to-back years.

What is the biggest comeback in FedEx Cup history?
McIlroy started the final round of the 2022 Tour Championship, down six strokes. Scottie Scheffler was well in the lead. McIlory put up a 4-under 66 on the day, barely beating Scheffler. He not only won the TOUR Championship, but edged out Scheffler by one stroke for the FedEx Cup.
