Socceroos coach Tony Popovic and captain Jackson Irvine have criticised the referee's decision to award a penalty to Colombia in the Socceroos' friendly against the South Americans.
Although not threatening the goals, Australia had competed well enough against the 13th ranked side in the world to be tied heading into the final 15 minutes of the game.
But a penalty to Colombia undid all of that, as James Rodriguez sent Paul Izzo the wrong way to give his side the lead, setting in motion the Socceroos' downfall as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat.
The referee pointed to the spot after Callum Elder seemingly dragged down Santiago Arias in the box. But according to Socceroos coach Tony Popovic, the penalty was never there to begin with.
"The first goal, the penalty, we never get that penalty," Popovic said post-game.
"Only Colombia would get that penalty today. There's no way that we could get a penalty like that. So very disappointed in that decision."
Jackson Irvine expressed a similar sentiment after the match.
"I haven't seen the penalty back enough times, but it looked so weak," the Socceroos captain said.
Meanwhile, defender Milos Degenek didn't miss his chance to sound off on the referee.
"No excuses but the ref just kills the game," Degenek said afterwards.
"You call a penalty for something, we ask for an explanation [and] she has absolutely no idea what she's done. She's gone and said 'Yeah, pay advantage.' But then why would you give a penalty if you paid advantage? If it's a penalty you give it away a straight away, you don't pay advantage. So she's killed the game there."
The penalty seemingly put the Socceroos off their game, as from there they would go onto concede two cheap goals in the dying minutes.
It sees the team fall to their third consecutive defeat, the worst losing streak the Socceroos have endured since 2014.
