The plan for Serie A giants AC Milan to play Como in an Australian-hosted league fixture has been cancelled.

Australian city Perth was slated to host the Italian top division fixture on February 8 at Optus Stadium with AC Milan's San Siro stadium unavailable due to the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

It would have been the first time a major European league had played a league fixture abroad - but organisational issues between Serie A's governing body and the Asian Football Confederation have seen the scheduled match scrapped.

“Plans for Perth to host the first-ever European league fixture played outside its national borders are off by mutual agreement,” a joint statement from Italy’s Serie A and the government of Western Australia said.

“Both parties have come to this decision due to financial risks that could not be mitigated, onerous approval conditions, and last-minute complications beyond their control.”

There was further elaboration on the call by Serie A boss Ezio Simonelli.

“Due to an escalation of further unacceptable demands made in the last few hours by the AFC... It has become impossible to play the Milan-Como match in Perth on 8th February,” Simonelli said.

Several Milan players had also shown concern over the 13,000 kilometre round-trip from Milan to Perth, including France stars Adrien Rabiot and Mike Maignan.

Earlier this year, La Liga attempted to move an October match Barcelona vs. Villarreal to Miami, Florida, but the proposal was canned after backlash from supporters and politicians.
