Serie A league table 2022/23: Updated standings, classifica as Milan, Inter, Napoli, Juventus and Roma battle for Italy's scudetto image

Napoli re-took the top spot in the table from Atalanta with a wild 3-2 victory over Bologna. Atalanta had momentarily taken the table lead with a 2-1 win over Sassuolo on Saturday, but go back to two points adrift. The Partenopei are still in good shape to regain the top spot if they can win their 10th straight match in all competitions, which they are expected to do.

There are three other teams dreaming of the Scudetto and two of them go head-to-head on Sunday. Defending champions AC Milan got a late winner from Sandro Tonali to top Hellas Verona, while Lazio and Udinese drew 0-0 to share the spoils and both remain in the Champions League places.

If Roma and Inter Milan are serious about making a run for the Serie A Scudetto, they need to continue collecting points. Inter held strong for a 2-0 victory over Salernitana, while Roma play on the road at Sampdoria on Monday.

At the bottom of the table, Spezia and Cremonese drew as neither gain ground in the relegation battle, while Lecce hosts Fiorentina on Monday. Empoli picked up a big 1-0 home win over newly promoted Monza for a valuable three points in the battle against relegation.

The Sporting News brings you a full update of the current standings in the Italian top flight in the 2022/23 season, from the title race to the relegation battle.

Serie A title race for Scudetto

Atalanta are surprisingly in first place and Napoli need only draw against Bologna on Sunday to regain the top spot on goal difference. A win would lift the Partenopei into sole possession of the top spot.

Lazio and Udinese are showing they could be for real this season and the two will match up at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Sunday. Meanwhile, defending champions AC Milan remain in the mix after their victory over relegation-threatened Hellas Verona.

Serie A European places

As one of the top-ranked nations in Europe, Italy's Serie A has four automatic berths for the UEFA Champions League which go to the top four teams. There are also two tickets to the Europa League (5th place and the Coppa Italia winner) and one to the Conference League (sixth place).

It appears like there could be some surprise teams (Atalanta and Udinese) making a challenge for those four Champions League spots and potentially snatch one or two from the usual contenders like AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus. Fans of the Roman clubs, AS Roma and Lazio, would love nothing more than to see their teams back in Europe's elite competition.

The consolation prize for fifth place and sixth place are the berths in the Europa League and Conference League, respectively. And if the winner of the Coppa Italia happens to be a top-four team, then the Europa League berth that comes with that trophy will instead go to sixth place, with the Conference League spot handed down to the seventh-place team.

Serie A relegation

The bottom three spots in the table are the trap doors that send those finishers down to the second-tier Serie B at season's end.

The three promoted sides from Serie B — Lecce, Cremonese, and Monza — are considered immediate candidates to go right back down, but only Cremonese find themselves in the bottom three spots having failed to pick up a win so far this season.

Sampdoria are at the bottom, but they will take heart from their hard-fought 1-1 draw at Bologna in the first match for new manager Dejan Stankovic. Now it's Bologna, also under new manager Thiago Motta, who are sinking dangerously toward the relegation zone. Both have tough matches in Matchweek 10 against the likes of Napoli and Roma.
