How much will it cost Man United to sack Ruben Amorim? Breaking down club spending on head coach change image

Ruben Amorim was appointed Manchester United head coach in November 2024 and tasked with restoring both results and positive performances after a difficult final 18 months under Erik ten Hag.

Despite arriving from Sporting CP with a reputation as one of Europe's brightest young coaches, Amorim has gone the way of his Old Trafford predecessors. The team suffered by far their worst domestic season in the Premier League era in 2024/25, and defeat in the Europa League final ensured there would be no positivity to a wretched campaign.

After three games of 2025/26, United were back in crisis mode following a humiliating Carabao Cup exit to fourth-tier Grimsby Town.

Amorim's side regrouped and put together enough positive results to be in contention for a top-four spot by the midway point of the season, but an embarrassing draw against bottom-of-the-table Wolves and incendiary press conferences either side of a 1-1 draw with Leeds United preceded a hasty departure on January 5.

United paid no small expense to bring in Amorim and his staff. Now they have decided to make another managerial change, there will be another sizeable cost to pay.

AllSportsPeople looks at Amorim's reported salary, how it compares to the top-earning Premier League managers, and the bill that will come with wielding the axe.

How much will it cost Man United to sack Ruben Amorim?

The cost of firing Amorim is not yet clear as the specifics of a severance package must be worked out. However, it is likely to see United pay in the region of £10 million ($13.5m).

According to United's accounts published in November 2024, it cost the club £10.4m ($13.1m) to dismiss former manager Ten Hag and his coaching staff. The club paid a further £11m to bring in Amorim and six members of his own coaching team.

In other words, it cost the club around £21m ($27m) to change the first-team management of the men's side, and if the cost of Amorim's exit is at expected, that sum could rise to more than £30m ($40.4m). That is a lot of money to spend on two managers over the course of 18 months.

Ruben Amorim contract, salary at Man United

According to an article published by The Sun just after Amorim was appointed by Manchester United, his contract was worth £6.5 million ($8.7m) per year. That breaks down to around £125,000 ($167,000) per week.

His contract was due to run until June 2027.

FootballFanCast placed Amorim in fourth in the table of the highest-paid Premier League managers as of the end of 2024/25. He earned slightly more than Liverpool's Arne Slot, but was way down on the top two.
