Sam Kerr's homecoming return will have to wait a little longer after she was an unused substitute against New Zealand on Friday night, but that was no challenge for the Matildas, who bounced back to dominate, 5-0.

Back in front of their home fans, the Matildas would get the Gosford crowd roaring early, scoring twice inside the opening 25 minutes, before piling on three more goals in the final 20.

The highlight of the name came as Ellie Carpenter and Kyra Cooney-Cross scored in consecutive minutes just after the 70th minute mark.

Cooney-Cross' effort was particularly incredible, as she caught New Zealand's goalkeeper off her line, striking from way outside the box to give her side their fourth of the night.

The win is a big boost for the Matildas, who were in need of a strong showing after a disappointing defeat to England in their last round of international friendlies.

They will again face the Kiwis next Tuesday night in Adelaide.
