Liverpool vs. Everton score: Premier League result, updates, stats as Gravenberch, Ekitike give Reds derby joy image

Liverpool held out for a 2-1 win over Everton in the 247th Merseyside derby to extend their perfect start to the Premier League season.

The reigning champions have now won five out of five and are in possession of the only remaining 100% record in England's top flight.

Fine first-half goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike ultimately proved decisive, even though Everton — once again inspired by an excellent performance from Jack Grealish – reduced the arrears through Idrissa Gueye and made life difficult for their neighbours.

The hosts hit the front in picture-book fashion after 11 minutes, Gravenberch sweeping home a wonderful first-time finish from Mohamed Salah's chipped pass into the area. The ball arced delightfully past Jordan Pickford's dive to nestle in the far corner.

Ekitike made the most of his selection ahead of Alexander Isak in attack with a cool finish just before the half hour. The way the midfield trio of Dominik Szoboszlai, the recalled Alexis Mac Allister and Gravenberch combined to create the chance meant the benching of Florian Wirtz felt like Arne Slot's more significant decision.

Everton enjoyed a better spell before the interval, with Gueye scuffing a presentable opportunity on the end of a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's cutback. He made a far better fist of his next effort when Grealish pulled Everton forward down the left, Iliman Ndiaye touched the cross back and Gueye crashed into the top corner.

Liverpool have thrown away two-goal leads against Bournemouth, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid, but they held firm under pressure from an Everton side who look an entirely different proposition from the forlorn outfit of recent seasons.

Liverpool vs. Everton live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

Goodness me, Van Dijk almost hits a backpass beyond Alisson. Can you imagine? Liverpool hold on, that's five wins out of five in the Premier League for the champions, who might like a victory where they don't have to dig so deep at some point. Everton come up short, but they're a different proposition entirely this season and will be a pain for most teams they face. Grealish gets a booking for dissent after full-time but he's a big part of their transformation. Thanks for joining us.

90+2 mins: Liverpool corner. Konate and Van Dijk staying back. It looks like Szoboszlai and Salah will try to keep it down there.

90+1 mins: Just the three minutes left for Everton to nick a point or Liverpool to settle it.

90 mins: More Everton pressure. Patient stuff, orchestrated by Grealish. He lifts a lovely ball to the back post and Jones has to head behind under pressure from O'Brien. From the corner, Grealish tries a spectacular volley but gets it all wrong.

85 mins: Isak pops a pass into the box for Salah. He's just offside but Tarkowswki, who makes a fabulous last-ditch challenge, wasn't to know that.

84 mins: Salah and Wirtz combine to find Szoboszlai, whose shot is charged down by Garner.

80 mins: Free-kick in a decent position for Everton after Grealish draws a foul from Bradley for the umpteenth time. Garner crashes it over everybody into the advertising hoardings. That's poor.

76 mins: Liverpool back on top now. Mykolenko hooks behind and there's another corner to defend.

72 mins: Konate gets up and powers goalwards, Grealish gets in the way and punts clear.

71 mins: More Everton pressure wins a corner. Ndiaye can't recycle the ball on the edge of the area and Liverpool break. Wirtz into the area in front of the Kop and Tarkowski makes a brilliant saving challenge.

68 mins: Liverpool rocking and reeling here. Grealish to the fore once more. His cross looks overhit and but Gueye gets it back across and Barry is penalised for a foul on Alisson. One of those goalkeeper fouls.

67 mins: Isak on for Ekitike, which means all of Liverpool's £241m reserves are now deployed.

63 mins: Salah looks like he might have a tap-in but Everton scramble behind. Szoboszlai's delivery doesn't beat the first man but Liverpool keep the attaack going and have one on the other side.

61 mins: It's been a poor period for Liverpool and Slot makes a double change. Wirtz and Jones on for Gakpo and Mac Allister.

58 minsGOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Idrissa Gueye!!!!!!

Now then! Grealish pulls Everton forward down the left, stands one up to the far post, Ndiaye touches it down and Gueye smashes into the top corner. Game on.

57 mins: Dewsbury-Hall's cross deflects goalwards but Alisson coolly watches it into his gloves.

56 mins: Konate heads away the latest cross shovelled into the Liverpool box. The hosts can break, Keane make a vital interception as Gravenberch looks for Ekitike. Now here's Salah in the Everton box, doesn't really get hold of hs shot and Pickford tumbles onto the ball.

54 mins: Ekitike has a speculative shot blocked by Tarkowski. Liverpool keep the attack alive but Salah's cross has too much on it for Ekitike at the far post.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We're back underway. A change up front for Everton, with Barry on for Beto.

Halftime

Everton improved after Ekitike's goal but it's a long way back. With the midfield three of Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and the excellent Gravenberch back together, this feels a lot more like the formidable title-winning machine of last season.

45+1 mins: Grealish slots a lovely pass down the left for Dewsbury-Hall. His cutback finds Gueye, who completely scuffs his finish. A better chance than he made it look.

43 mins: Everton corner half-cleared and Ekitike gets in the way of Garner's drive.

40 mins: Grealish wins a foul off Bradley. He then holds up four fingers to the referee, suggesting he's keeping a better tally on the Northern Irishman's fouls than Darren England is.

38 mins: Everton full-backs Mykolenko and O'Brien with crosses in quick succession that are repelled by Kerkez and Van Dijk.

37 mins: Ndiaye reads a duff clearance from Alisson and scoots down the Liverpool left. His cross for Beto is a little behind the striker, who hooks a volley over.

32 mins: Liverpool have made an unusual habit of shelling two-goal leads this season. It's hard to envisage that happening again today.

29 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! Hugo Ekitike!!!!!

A mountain for Everton to climb now as Ekitike scores his fourth of the season. Mac Allister finds the opening goalscorer Gravenberch to slide a pass through for the Frenchman, who slots home.

Available in the UK

27 mins: Lovely play from Grealish to craft. an opening for Dewsbury-Hall, who clatters over on the angle. Liverpool look to get back down the other end and Ndiaye is booked for a cynical foul on Kerkez.

23 mins: Gueye skids a pass around the corner for Beto and Konate is forced to clear behind. Alisson gets a punch on Dewsbury-Hall's delivery and Van Dijk does the rest.

19 mins: Mac Allister and Bradley have shots inside the Everton box charged down in quick succession.

15 mins: Liverpool look rampant here as Salah fizzes one just over the top corner. It feels like a moment in the game where Everton need to hang in there.

11 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Ryan Gravenberch!!!!!!

Liverpool lead the derby and it's a fabulous goal. Salah curls an inquisitive ball into the Everton box and Gravenberch guides a wonderful first-time shot into the far corner. Superb technique.

Available in the UK

10 mins: Bradley on the back of Grealish, who wants a free-kick that isn't forthcoming. Liverpool break and Gakpo has another effort blocked.

7 mins: Tarkowski can only head a Salah cross upwards, meaning O'Brien has to get across to smother Gakpo's volley.

5 mins: Everton leave themselves open to a lightning transition and Bradley joins the attack. Salah's pass to the Northern Ireland full-back is just behind him as he charges into the area.

3 mins: Ekitike nicks into to get to the ball ahead of Gueye deep in Everton territory and feeds Salah. The Egyptian's cross is one looking for Ekitike but Keane makes an important defensive header.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Dewsbury-Hall gets us underway and the ball is immediately pumped out towards Grealish but goes out for a Liverpool throw.

3 mins The teams are out. The Everton fans boo the Premier League anthem. Which warms them up nicely for booing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. We're almost ready to go.

15 mins before kickoff: The rain is still howling down at Anfield. Peter Crouch, the former Liverpool striker who is part of TNT's matchday coverage, just remarked "it's what you want on derby day". Get set for some lively stuff during the opening exchanges.

40 mins before kickoff: Those two changes in the full-back positions for Liverpool underline a potential area where Everton can find some joy. Jack Grealish has been in irresistible form since joining the Toffees on loan from Manchester City, while Iliman Ndiaye is a creative spark on the other flank. Bradley and Kerkez could have their hands full.

1 hr 10 mins before kickoff: More or less as you'd expect for Everton, with James Garner getting the nod over Tim Iroegbunam.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in. Conor Bradley and Milos Kerkez get the nod in the fullback positions for Liverpool, but Arne Slot's biggest calls are further up the field. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz drop to the bench, meaning Alexis Mac Allister and Hugo Ekitike are in from the start.

1 hr 35 mins before kickoff: It's a soaking wet, slate grey day in the north west of England today. But don't worry, it doesn't look like we're going to lose this fixture to extreme weather for the second time in as many seasons. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Merseyside, which means an increased risk of localised flooding and power cuts. For our purposes, that means slide tackle weather.

2 hours before kickoff. Hello and welcome to The Sporting News's coverage of the 247th Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield.

Liverpool vs. Everton lineups, team news

Slot's main call focused on what to do with Alexander Isak after the Premier League record transfer made his Liverpool debut against Atletico Madrid.

The Dutch coach has confirmed he is not ready for 90 minutes against Everton, but after claiming he could only manage 45 against Diego Simeone's team, the Swede was not replaced until just before the hour.

Hugo Ekitike rotates back in, as Slot aims to protect Isak and allow his No. 9 to build up match fitness with a role off the bench. More surprisingly, fellow mega-money signing Florian Wirtz drops to the bench as Alexis Mac Allister comes in.

Full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Andy Robertson were both replaced against Los Rojiblancos, and Conor Bradley and Milos Kerkez are today's starting full-backs.

Liverpool starting XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson (GK) — Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez — Gravenberch, Mac Allister — Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo — Ekitike

Liverpool subs: Mamardashvili (GK), Gomez, Endo, Wirtz, Isak, Jones, Robertson, Frimpong, Ngumoha.

Moyes is still without key centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite due to a thigh injury, with James Tarkowski and Michael Keane continuing at the heart of Everton's defence.

Vitalii Mykolenko missed out on last weekend's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa after sustaining an injury on international duty but the Ukraine full-back returns here.

Everton starting XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford (GK) — O'Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko — Garner, Gueye — Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Grealish — Beto

Everton subs: Travers (GK), Patterson, McNeil, Barry, Dibling, Coleman, Alcaraz, Aznou, Iroegbunam.
