Newcastle United have confirmed that St James’ Park will have a slightly bigger capacity this season. The official number has moved from 52,257 to 52,264.

That’s an increase of just seven seats.

On paper, it sounds like progress. In reality, supporters see it as another missed opportunity.

For a fanbase that regularly fills every seat and joins online queues of over 100,000 for Champions League tickets, the update has landed flat.

The Magpies’ owners had raised expectations about expansion, with talk of a 65,000-seater stadium either at Leazes Park or by redeveloping the current ground.

Instead, the news has left fans scratching their heads.

How Newcastle fans reacted to the St James’ Park update

On social media, the reaction was sharp and full of sarcasm. One supporter wrote (@gallowgatenufc1): “No more need for anymore stadium plans or mock ups. Sorted. I might actually get a ticket now.”

Another joked that the club might need to bring in “foreign fans” to make the new number worthwhile.

The frustration is clear. Many are wondering why updates on a major project keep getting pushed back.

Reports suggest the hierarchy want to finalize other appointments and projects, including a new training ground, before turning to the stadium.

Expansion still in limbo

Newcastle were expected to outline proposals for a 65,000-seat venue in early 2025, but that announcement is now delayed.

A new stadium remains the preference of some inside the boardroom, though expanding St James’ Park to around 60,000 has not been ruled out.

The owners are said to be weighing the financial return against the high cost of such a build. Until then, supporters will have to live with the smallest of gains — seven extra seats that won’t come close to easing demand.

For now, attention turns back to the pitch. St James’ Park will be packed again when Barcelona arrive in the Champions League.

If nothing else, Newcastle fans know how to turn noise into their twelfth man, even if a few thousand more would like to join in.
