Newcastle United have completed the signing of Yoane Wissa from Brentford for a reported £50m [$67m] fee potentially rising to £55m [$73m] if conditions are met.

The striker has agreed a four-year deal and will wear the number 9 shirt previously held by Callum Wilson who left the club earlier this summer after playing for five seasons.

Wissa arrives at St James' Park with a rich vein of form from the last term, where he scored 19 Premier League goals, which was also his best tally since arriving in England from Lorient in 2021.

The 28-year-old became Newcastle’s sixth summer recruit and follows Nick Woltemade in strengthening Eddie Howe’s attacking options.

France born star who represents DR Congo internationally made his breakthrough at Lorient after earlier spells with Chateauroux, Angers, Laval and Ajaccio.

He helped Lorient achieve promotion to Ligue 1 before joining newly promoted Brentford, where he scored 49 goals across 149 appearances in all competitions.

Howe has faced a difficult summer with Alexander Isak departing to Liverpool leaving the Magpies manager short of options.

The arrival of Wissa now gives the club a proven top-flight scorer who has consistently delivered goals in England’s highest division.

What did Eddie Howe say about Wissa’s transfer?

Speaking to Newcastle United official page, Howe praised the qualities Wissa will add to his squad.

“Yoane is a player who we have admired for some time and we are delighted to sign him,” he said.

“He brings proven Premier League quality and his work rate and style of play will excite supporters.”

Wissa’s immediate assignment with the Tyneside would come against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 13.
