Pep Guardiola confirms Man City star's injury after Club World Cup exit image

Manchester City's journey in the Club World Cup came to an end with their 4-3 loss against Al-Hilal in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup on June 30 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

After being tied 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes, Al-Hilal led twice more in the additional period and Marcos Leonardo's second of the game in the 112th minute knocked the Premier League club out of the competition.

Along with their elimination, there is more bad news for City as one of their stars, Rodri, appeared to have picked up an injury during the match.

Following his team's disheartening loss, manager Pep Guardiola provided an update on Rodri's situation.

What did Man City boss Pep Guardiola say about Rodri's injury?

Rodri came off the bench against Al-Hilal in the 53rd minute to replace Ilkay Gundogan. However, the Ballon d'Or winner was seen unexpectedly subbed off in extra time. Phil Foden came on to volley home City's third goal from Rayan Cherki's sublime lofted pass.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola addressed Rodri's substitution and hinted at a possible injury without giving out many details.

"We have to see Rodri, he complained about his situation, but we need time to come back," he told a post-match press conference

Rodri had an injury-riddled run for the majority of the 2024/25 campaign, starting with his hamstring injury that kept him off the pitch at the beginning of the season.

The 29-year-old then suffered a cruciate ligament tear in September last year and was sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. He missed 50 matches for Man City and managed to make only four appearances.

Guardiola will be hoping that Rodri's latest setback is nothing significant with a new season approaching. City face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their first Premier League match of the 2025/26 season on August 16 at Molineux.
