Manchester City have been working to secure contract extensions for multiple players, with the latest addition being Rico Lewis.

One player who hasn't yet been offered a new contract is captain Bernardo Silva.

The 31-year-old was named City captain this summer, but the Portuguese international has entered the final year of his contract.

Silva could see himself leaving the club soon, with Benfica's hierarchy aiming to secure his signature.

What did Benfica's administration say about Silva joining the club?

Speaking to Portuguese outlet A Bola, one of Benfica's presidential candidates, João Noronha Lopes, said, "I can confirm that a contract is waiting for Bernardo Silva.

"And I really want to bring Bernardo in in January. He embodies everything I want for Benfica: identity, a winning culture, and he's a huge Benfica fan. And I can assure you that we won't stop here."

Silva went through Benfica's youth system before joining Monaco in 2015. The midfielder left Monaco in 2017 to join Man City, where he has been since.

Benfica's manager, Bruno Lage, also spoke on Silva's future, saying, "From what I know about Bernardo and his motivation is that soon, I don't know when, but soon, he will be a Benfica player regardless of the president."

Pep Guardiola has strongly criticized having a big squad, which could be a reason that Silva could leave in one of the next transfer windows.

With Silva's contract expiring soon, Guardiola and City's hierarchy will have to decide on whether to extend the veteran midfielder or not.
