Why Diego Simeone was shown a red card?
Simeone later admitted he had lost his cool. Speaking after the match, he said: “I’m a person, I’m human.”
He also revealed that he had been insulted throughout the night: “Obviously my reaction is not justifiable; I insulted him, but it was 90 minutes of being insulted the whole time.”
The referee wasted no time in showing the red card.
Simeone tried to explain himself in his post-match press conference, but also made it clear he expects Liverpool to act: “When they identify the person who did this, it should have its consequences, but he who needs to stay calm and take the insults is me.”
The fan fires back
In a twist, the supporter in question seemed to enjoy the spotlight. Hours after the final whistle, he posted on social media: “Do I get the assist?”
The tongue-in-cheek comment quickly went viral, racking up hundreds of thousands of views. Football fans online joked that while Van Dijk scored the winner, it was the fan who created the real highlight of the night.
For Simeone, however, the matter is far from funny. He accepted responsibility for his actions but also highlighted the wider issue of abuse from the stands. As he put it, “In my place you just have to take it.”
