Barcelona set to extend star player's contract following his last season's contribution image

Barcelona had an envious 2024/25 campaign as they won three trophies domestically including the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.

The Catalans also reached the semifinals of the Champions League before getting eliminated by Inter Milan on extra time.

Manager Hansi Flick has instilled his attacking philosophy at Camp Nou, achieving immediate success in his first season.

Following a superb 2024/25 campaign, there's a lot of pressure on the German tactician to continue delivering on his promise this season.

Meanwhile, Barcelona's financial constraints have crippled their transfer dealings this summer as they could only manage to sign a couple of players in critical positions.

Therefore, the Catalans have been focused in keeping hold of their key players from last season and they have handed contract extensions to several players.

According to reports via Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona are prepared to offer a bumper five-year contract to Eric Garcia before Christmas following his heroics from last season.

With Inigo Martinez's departure this summer, Barcelona can't afford to lose another defender and therefore they are pushing for a contract extension for the former Manchester City man.

Why is Eric Garcia crucial to Hansi Flick's Barcelona?

Garcia moved to Barcelona in 2021 on a free transfer after his contract at Manchester City ran out. The youngster was mostly preferred as a backup defender before he was loaned out to Girona in 2023/24 campaign.

He gained a lot of confidence playing for Girona under Michel which eventually helped him turn his career upside down.

The Spanish defender returned to Camp Nou and instantly became a hit under Flick mainly due to versatility and goal contribution from the backline.

He finished last season with eight goal contributions from 45 appearances across all competitions, including a goal against Inter Milan in the Champions League semifinal.

Garcia brings tactical flexibility, intelligence and defensive reliability and all these qualities are appreciated by Flick in his ultra attacking high-line defense.

Apart from providing a backup option at centre-back, Garcia's ability to slot in at right back makes him a handy addition to this Barcelona system allowing Flick to rest Jules Kounde in lesser important games. Garcia is also capable of playing in midfielder as a destroyer if needed.

His current contract with Barcelona runs out next summer and therefore the Catalans are keen to tie him down to a long-term contract before this season's transfer window in January.
