A defiant Usman Khawaja has answered his critics with a provocative post on Instagram as pressure builds on his Australian Ashes position.

The veteran opener courted heavy criticism about his preparation for the first Test against England after being unable to play in sections of the match because of back spasms.

It was reported Khawaja played golf on all three days leading into the Perth Test - including skipping an optional training session with his team-mates.

With his position in the Australian team in doubt ahead of the second Ashes Test on December 4, Khawaja chose an interesting way to comment on the criticism he has received.

In a post with the caption 'What a week! It had it all', Khawaja posted a series of images which included a golf course alongside stills of Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland celebrating.

Team-mates of Khawaja both currently and in the past commented on the post, including Pat Cummins with a golf emoji, Trent Copeland with laughing emojis and David Warner writing 'foreeeeeeee'.

Khawaja was booked to play in the Australian PGA pro-am on Wednesday but withdrew from the event following the Perth Test because of his back injury.

The injury could force Khawaja out of the team for the second Test or he could be axed after Travis Head excelled with a match-winning century as an opener.

In both scenarios with Khawaja absent - and assuming Head is elevated to the top of the order - Josh Inglis or Beau Webster could come into the team as the extra middle-order batter.

Matthew Renshaw could be promoted to the Australian team as an opener also.
