A teenage cricketer, Ben Austin, has tragically passed away after being struck in the neck by a ball during warm-ups for a senior T20 fixture in Melbourne.

The freak accident happened at Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully, moments before a scheduled clash between Ferntree Gully and Eildon Park.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 4.45 pm after the school student suddenly collapsed.

Paramedics, including mobile intensive care staff and an advanced life support unit, treated him on the ground before rushing him to Monash Medical Centre.

In tragic developments, it has since been confirmed by the club that Austin died on Wednesday.

"We are absolutely devastated by the passing of Ben, and the impacts of his death will be felt by all in our cricket community," the club noted in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family — Jace, Tracey, Cooper and Zach, his extended family, his friends and to all of those who knew Ben and the joy that he brought.

"We ask you to please respect the privacy of Ben’s family during this time," the club continued.

"Jace and Tracey would like to thank Ambulance Vic, the Police, the Monash Children’s Hospital and those people who assisted on Tuesday.

"Further details will be shared as they become known, and we will advise of these through our usual process.

"We ask for your continued support in this time of grieving. May Ben Rest in Peace."

Community in shock after freak accident

The teenager, described as both a promising cricketer and a talented junior footballer, represented his region in various age-group sides.

Teammates and onlookers were left traumatised by the incident after Austin, who was wearing a helmet, was reportedly struck from a ball launcher in the nets.

Ringwood and District Cricket Association chair Michael Finn said the league was doing everything possible to assist the affected clubs.

"We’re committed to providing whatever support we need to for the clubs and the officials that were involved," Finn said.
