It was case of what might have been for England on day two in the Second Ashes Test.

The tourists grassed no less than five chances in Brisbane as Australia ended the day with a 44-run lead and four first innings wickets still in hand.

Opener Ben Duckett and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith were both guilty of two forgettable moments in a frustrating day for Ben Stokes’ men.

Playing in his first Ashes series, 25-year-old Smith dropped a relatively straightforward early chance off Travis Head who added a further 30 runs before eventually departing.

Later in the evening Smith didn’t even move when Alex Carey edged a chance off Gus Atkinson, watching on as the ball flew between himself and Joe Root at first slip.

That moment came just an over after Michael Neser had also been dropped by Brydon Carse at cover off the bowling of unlucky Jofra Archer, meaning both of Australia’s not out batsmen at stumps had been given lives in the closing overs of play.

It wasn’t all bad news in the field for England, mind you, with all-rounder Will Jacks taking a one-handed screamer at backward square to remove Australian captain Steve Smith.

Earlier in the the day Marnus Labuschagne ended the England first innings with a superb diving outfield catch to remove Jofra Archer.
