England ODI captain Harry Brook has apologised after being fined for a boozy altercation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand.

The 26-year-old was fined AU$60,000 by the England and Wales Cricket Board for the incident, which occurred the night before an ODI against the Kiwis on November 1 last year.

Brook only managed to score six in the match, which England were defeated in.

The skipper - who is also the vice-captain of the Test team - explained what happened during the altercation, while also saying sorry.

“I was just trying to get into a club and the bouncer just clocked me, unfortunately," Brook told reporters prior to England's ODI match with Sri Lanka in Colombo.

“I wouldn’t say I was absolutely leathered. I’d had one too many drinks.

“Obviously I made a terrible mistake, not only as a player, but as a captain. It’s very unprofessional and I should be leading from the front and showing the players how it should be as a professional cricketer and a captain. I put myself in a bad situation, which I shouldn’t have done.”

Brook said earlier to reporters: “I’ve learnt from my mistakes.

“I want to apologise to my teammates, the fans and the ECB for putting them in a tricky situation.

“It will never happen again. I’m extremely sorry.”

The star English batter also admitted he was 'probably, slightly' lucky to not be sacked as England's ODI captain.

Brook's fine and apology comes after England were accused of poor preparation during the Ashes series, with allegations of a 'drinking culture' underpinned by photos of players with alcohol in Noosa and vision of an intoxicated Ben Duckett.
