The third Ashes Test between Australia and England will begin on a deeply sombre note at the Adelaide Oval.
Players, umpires and the capacity crowd will observe a minute of silence ahead of play in a united show of respect and solidarity for the victims of Sunday’s terror attack at Bondi Beach on the first night of the Jewish holiday, Hanukkah.
Ahead of play on day one, Australian singer John Williamson will also perform a heartfelt rendition of his iconic song ‘True Blue’ as a tribute all who have been affected by the shootings.
Officials have confirmed players from both sides will wear black armbands while flags at Adelaide Oval will also be flown at half-mast.
Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said the third Test would bring ‘millions of people together’ to acknowledge and pay tribute to the victims of the attack and those affected by it.
“This is a tragic time for all Australians and the thoughts of everyone in the cricket world are with the victims of this terrible event, their families, friends and the Jewish community,” Greenberg said.
“While sport can seem insignificant at times like this, we have the unusual opportunity to bring millions of people together to pay tribute, to console and to contemplate what we want our nation to be.
“We will continue to look at ways cricket can support and honour those who have been affected by the Bondi shootings and thank those who provided assistance during and since this tragedy.”
