Aussie selectors drop big Ashes hints with latest squad changes image

Australian selectors have made a series of changes to the national squads as they focus on both white ball cricket and the looming Ashes series.

The Aussies have made a solid start to the summer, winning the opening two ODI matches against India, with the third game coming at the SCG on Saturday.

The two teams will then meet in five Twenty20 games, starting in Canberra on October 29, while Sheffield Shield matches are also taking place as Test certainties and hopefuls hone their games.

Marnus Labuschagne, who has made an outstanding start to the domestic season and is considered almost certain of a Test recall, has been released from the ODI squad for a Shield clash for Queensland against NSW starting on Tuesday.

Steve Smith will line-up for the Blues in that same match as he begins his path towards what will be a critical role against England.

Smith will captain the side in at least the first Test in Perth if Pat Cummins succumbs to a back injury, as widely expected.

In terms of limited overs cricket, NSW skipper Jack Edwards has joined the ODI side for the third match, along with Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann and Josh Philippe.

Veteran Glenn Maxwell has recovered from a fractured wrist and has been added to the T20 squad, while 20-year-old quick Mahli Beardman is a bolter in the same 16-man roster.

A number of players will rotate in and out of the T20 squad, including paceman Josh Hazlewood, who will feature in the first two games before switching to Shield duties with NSW.

With a question mark over Cummins and Cameron Green recovering from a side strain, there is uncertainty over the final Ashes squad and a little extra incentive for cricketers on the fringe of the Test set-up.
