Sad Xavier Bartlett torment continues after Virat Kohli act in ODI victory image

A sad undercurrent to Australia's series-clinching ODI victory over India in Adelaide has continued on Friday morning.

After sending India in to bat on Thursday, Australia restricted the tourists to 9-264 from their 50 overs and in a nervy run chase, the home side reached the target with just two wickets remaining.

Earlier in the day, however, Aussie quick Xavier Bartlett trapped Indian legend Virat Kohli LBW for a duck, his second successive failure to score in this series.

Kohli's effort in Perth was the first time he had been dismissed for a duck in Australia and his second in Adelaide marked the first successive ducks from his long and wildly successful ODI career.

While it was a sad sight to see a great of the game wave to the crowd after another failure on Thursday, Bartlett was only doing his job as a professional cricketer, but the fallout has been strong for the 26-year-old.

Bartlett has more than 22,000 followers on Instagram, but only posts casually, with his last post coming on August 1 featuring photos of his performances in a number of limited overs matches.

His posts usually get a few hundred comments, but Indian fans used that most recent post to vent their anger at Bartlett for knocking 36-year-old Kohli over at Adelaide Oval.

At last count, that post has more than 4,400 comments, many of them unsavoury about Bartlett, including references to Kohli being his "father" and more distasteful narratives.

A similar fate befell Mitchell Starc after he was the man to remove Kohli for an eight-ball duck at Optus Stadium.

The moves from so-called fans come despite the Australian team being full of praise for Kohli and his contribution to the game, including from Bartlett himself shortly after he took his wicket.

“Probably one of the best white-ball players of all time,” he told Fox Cricket.

“Lucky to get him, I tried to bowl an outswinger and it nipped back. Probably a bit of pure luck but nice to see the back of him early.”

There had been speculation Kohli, who has retired from Test and T20 cricket, might try to reach the next ODI World Cup in 2027.

He has one more chance to make an impact with the bat in this series when the third and final game is held at the SCG on Saturday.
