Veteran opener declares his preferred Ashes partner to take on the Poms image

Usman Khawaja has had his say on Australia's contentious top order for the fast approaching Ashes series against England.

Veteran opener Khawaja is the only guaranteed member of Australia's top three to take on the Poms in next month's first Test in Perth,

Sam Konstas was Khawaja's most recent opening partner for the Test series against the West Indies, but has had a quiet start to the domestic season, while Marnus Labuschagne, Jake Weatherald and Matt Renshaw are among those pushing their case for selection.

Labuschagne is a likely selection after his superb form for Queensland, while Renshaw has impressed at ODI level for Australia and in the Sheffield Shield.

Khawaja would love to have both of his fellow Queenslanders with him in Perth.

“I’m biased, but a Queensland one-two-three would be great,” the 38-year-old said.

“(Renshaw) has obviously been there and done it. He scored 180 (opening in a Test) for Australia.

"He’s been in and out of the Australian teams, I think that’s a really good thing, because it allows you to grow, as I know from experience.

"So when you get an opportunity again, it’s not something new, it’s not something that you haven’t seen before.

“You’ve actually put things into place to be able to perform in those spots again.

“Whether it’s now, or whether it’s later, whenever ‘Rennie’ gets his chance, hopefully which he will get again, I know he’ll be ready for it."

Khawaja, who turns 39 in December, has scored just over 6000 runs in his 84 appearances to date in the baggy green cap.

He has had a close-up view of Labuschagne's return to form, after he was dropped for the Windies series, and hopes to see him back in Aussie colours against England.

“I still love seeing Marnus score runs," Khawaja said. "I love having him part of the team.

"He brings a lot of energy, so hopefully he’ll be back in the side, fingers crossed."
