The West Coast Eagles have traded small forward Liam Ryan to St Kilda in a trade that involves a historic first.

Ryan has wanted to become a Saints player for a while, requesting a trade to the club in late August from the Eagles.

The West Coast have traded its 2027 third-round pick and Liam Ryan to the Saints in exchange for St Kilda's 2026 second-round pick.

This involves the first trade that involves a draft pick from a draft that is two years away, with clubs only previously able to trade draft picks from the current year and the year after.

Ryan was in the Eagles' 2018 premiership-winning team, kicking two behind and collecting 10 disposals in their famous five-point win against Collingwood.

He recently turned 29 years old and played 124 games for the Eagles, kicking 158 goals for the club since being selected by the club with pick 26 in the 2017 national draft.

The Saints have had a big trade and free agency period so far, with Jack Silvagni, Tom De Koning and Sam Flanders all signing for the club so far.

Ryan has reportedly signed a three-year deal and will become the fourth signing for the Saints, with the small forward filling a need for the club.
