Port Adelaide great Chad Cornes details the day he got fired image

Port Adelaide great Chad Cornes has spoken about the end of his long association with the club and his hopes for incoming coach Josh Carr.

Cornes played 239 games for the Power, winning a flag and two All-Australian honours, and is a member of the club's Hall of Fame.

He moved into coaching towards the end of his playing days initially with GWS, returning to Port Adelaide in 2015.

But with Carr taking over from Ken Hinkley, he decided to make sweeping changes to the coaching department, bringing in the likes of Stuart Dew, Andy Collins and Hamish Hartlett.

Carr also informed Cornes, his former teammate and long-time friend, that he wouldn't be joining the new regime.

“It was interesting when he told me I wasn’t required,” Cornes told SEN.

“That was a tough convo because we’ve been really great mates for quite a long time and we still will be. It ended OK in the end.

“We had some great chats post that last game. I’m really positive of what he can do and I do honestly wish him all the best.”

The Power enduring a difficult 2025 as Hinkley gradually passed the coaching reins over to Carr, finishing 13th on the ladder.

Yet Cornes has no doubts Carr will prove a success as he moves into a head coaching role for the first time.

“I think he will (be a great coach),” Cornes said. “I’m not exactly sure how he will change the game plan.

"I know he had some issues with the way we wanted to move the ball. I think he will be a little safer with ball in hand.

“He has a really strong relationship with the boys. Obviously a tough, hard, really courageous player so I’m sure that will rub off in the way the boys go about it.”
