'Generational project': Tassie Devils return serve on damning stadium report image

The Tassie Devils have fired back after a damning report was released over their contentious Hobart stadium plans, with the club calling it a "generational project".

On Wednesday, the Tasmanian Planning Commission (TPC) released a savage report on the proposed new stadium for the state's looming AFL team.

Tasked with assessing the viability of the Macquarie Point stadium back in October 2023, the TPC's Recommendation Report opened with the blunt line: "The Panel recommends that the project should not proceed."

The eight-page report examined a range of issues, including the financial, social and environmental impacts of the stadium, which the TPC said needed a $1 billion loan to construct and would balloon to $1.8 billion over 10 years

It concluded: "In very simple terms, the stadium is too big for the site and the benefits it will bring are significantly outweighed by the disbenefits it creates."

While the AFL is yet to comment on the report into the proposed 23,000-seat venue, which is a requirement for the club to join the league, the Devils returned serve to the TPC in a statement released on Friday.

"Tasmania Football club acknowledges the released of the TPC report this week," it read.

"Our club deeply believes in the economic, social and cultural benefits of our club and the critical infrastructure to support it.

"This is a once in a generation opportunity to celebrate our passion, pride and potential, and inspire generations.

"We could not be more determined and focused on realising the opportunity that is at our fingertips. Time is now of the essence for us to be ready for the 'first bounce'.

"The club remains committed to working alongside and together with the Parliament and broader Tasmanian community to see this generational project come to life."

Despite the damning report, the final say on the stadium lies with the upper and lower houses of Tasmania's parliament.
