Clayton Oliver traded to GWS, makes way for Jack Steele image

The Clayton Oliver era at Melbourne is officially over, with GWS swooping in to steal the 28-year-old for just a third-round pick.

The Demons received only a future third-round pick for their club legend, the same price they paid to lure Jack Steele out of St Kilda. It's unclear if the GWS pick is being forwarded to the Saints, or if it's a separate pick.

The two deals happened just minutes apart, according to Seven's Mitch Cleary.

A meeting a couple of weeks ago with new Melbourne senior coach Steven King set in motion Oliver's departure, with King telling the three-time All-Australian that his days as a member of Melbourne's midfielder might be numbered.

Meanwhile, fellow inside midfielder Jack Steele had been told to explore his options by the Saints after handing in his captaincy, with the Demons emerging on the final day of the trade period as a potential destination.
